I read a fiction book in 1998/9 which I'd love to read again but can't remember the title of. It was a chick-lit type book written from the perspectives of both a woman and man (both in their 20s) so one chapter would be from her, the next from him etc, and seemed a fairly popular book at the time.

It followed their lives as they met and dated, and also focused on the female character's career struggles. I think it was a dual author book as well so might have been written by both a male and a female author. (I think!). It was a romance, but also the young woman was struggling to get her career off the ground and did lots of temp jobs and in the end, she was made permanent in her dream role which she'd started as a temp, in some sort of fashion or journalist role and also the relationship was firmed up so it had a nice ending.

The female character may have been named Amy but that might have been one of the authors? I don't know but I do think I remember the name Amy.

Other random details I remember - she turned 25 in the story, and also she described herself as a "size 11" because she was between a 10 and a 12. I think that stuck with me because I would have described myself the same back then!

If anyone knows the title I'd be really happy so I can track down the book and re-live my late 90s holiday read!

I know it sounds like the plot of several books in that genre, but this going to bug me because I feel like I know the exact book you’re talking about. I cannot for love nor money title it or name the author. It’s one of those popular “chick lit” authors.

I’m going to end up down a Google rabbit hole now. I just know it 😄

I was going to suggest Come Together, see @BlazingWorld got there before me!

vernatheraven · 02/11/2023 10:45

No idea but watching with interest as it sounds good

Ok that was not the book I had in mind. I think I was thinking of Where Rainbows End by Cecilia Ahern, but that’s both too late to fit OP’s description and only has one author!

Come Together sounds far more likely. I hope that’s the one you were looking for @Rosykitten. I love it when a random internet query proves fruitful 😄

Wow you lot are amazing! Thank you Blazingworld and Dempsey73! I'm absolutely certain that's the one, it has an Amy as the female character and I was just thinking before that perhaps the male was called Jack or Jacob and there's a Jack in Come Together.

I remember my copy having a jazzier cover than the one pictured but it still looks to be the same book. It's a really good read (well at least it was 24 years ago so memories are faded) but I remember thinking it was well written and paced especially for that type of fiction and also the female character really resonated with my own life at the time, the uncertainties and finding own way in life for that age etc was spot on.

Thanks again! Off to track down a copy and have some happy reading. I read it on holiday and I can picture the very place and the very spot by the pool I read it at. Smile

Rosykitten · 02/11/2023 11:06

Ooh new level of excitement, there was a sequel!? Even more fun finding out as well how Jack and Amy turned out (23 years after reading the original!) Thanks for the tip-off!

@Rosykitten also ,The Seven year itch is the name of the follup of Jack and Amies story after the one previously mentioned.

A trilogy! My cup runneth over Grin I will have lots of reading to do!

I always love finding out "what happens next", even years later, or if it's not as amazing as I found the original. I still like knowing how the author viewed the characters' progression.

Thanks again you fab bunch Smile
