I'm just downloaded the latest Jack Reacher book. The Secret. Omg what a load of rubbish.

I loved the other 27 so am severely disappointed! I've given up on it.

Any suggestions for my next read?

I want a good strong character, male or female.

Bit sort of Equaliser like! Easy to read. Have read the lasted Strike book.

Any suggestions please? Otherwise it's going to be another wasted mumsnet night, handing out my unwanted shit advice :)

Clare Macintosh - ‘The Hostage’ is really good. Also, ‘I See You’.

Louise Penny's Gamache series.

Early James Ellroy? His later books are more difficult. Early ones are more straightforward, like the Lloyd Hopkins trilogy - "Blood on the Moon", "Because the Night" and "Suicide Hill". There's an omnibus of all three, "LA Noir".

Thanks all!! Will def have at look at downloading these.

I ended up reading A Woman of No Importance" the untold story of Virginia Hall, WW2's most dangerous spy.

Good grief if it was made into a film you wouldn't believe it! She was an amputee too.

Incredible woman. Ended up reading it all night!!

Whoops!!

If you are looking for a very funny new book written by a 56 year old menopausal woman who had had enough of four years of losing herself, then please read my story, now on Amazon UK as an e book.

"I'm no Shakespeare: Walking the South West Coast Path"

It tells my true story, of how a nosey menopausal linguist throws away her pills, pulls on a back pack, and accidentally writes a bestseller.

This summer I walked the entire length of the South West Coast Path, carrying my own kit and camping, and my book is now self published.

It's had great reviews and I would be delighted to have more readers.

I'm a very long term mumsnetter who first joined when my youngest son was 2. He's now almost 22!

Thank you 👍

I've tried to read American Tabloid but have found the writing to be hard to get into. Is it me? I really want to read it but each time I have picked up I put it down after a page. Help!

Ellroy's earlier books are more straightforward in plot and style. The later ones are more baroque and involved. The last 20 or so years of his stuff will be unreadable to all but devoted fans. The Lloyd Hopkins trilogy would be the most conventional, accessible stuff he's done.

Lessons in chemistry - wonderful female protagonist.
I'm so sad that I finished it.

The book about Virginia Hall is brilliant. I couldn't put it down.

I've now put this in my amazon wish list @babybluefish
