Book suggestions for reading to teen DD

Hi,

I’m going to start reading a book to my DD14 in the run up to Christmas this year and wondered if anyone has any recommendations?

DD is dyslexic so reads very little by herself and we stopped reading to her a few years ago. I currently have some health problems so I’d just like to try to connect on a different level for a little while. Obviously her interests have changed but I’d like to find something related to Christmas / winter if possible.

My first thoughts are The Lion,The Witch and The Wardrobe or an Agatha Christie? She used to love the Astrid Lundgren Noisy Village winter stories but I can’t think of anything older that has a similar cosy feel.

Any ideas?

I often like to read The Christmas Mystery in December. There is a chapter every day from 1-24 December. www.amazon.co.uk/Christmas-Mystery-Fiction/dp/0753808668

BTW, I know it says on Amazon that the reading age is 8-11 years, but I'm over 50 and still enjoy it! It's just a lovely story.

The Children of Green Knowe
The Box of Delights
The More the Merrier by Anne Fine (I found this one hilarious)

What about the Tiffany Aching books? Start with The Wee Free Men. I read them to my son at a similar age and we both LOVED them. Great stories and very funny.

I'm currently reading Human Universe by Brian Cox to my 15 yr old. It would be way too difficult for him to read to himself but when we can stop and check bits we don't understand it's fun.

Oh, or - because it's the run-up to Christmas - what about 'A Boy Called Christmas' by Matt Haig?

Jeanette Winterson's Christmas Days: 12 Stories and 12 Feasts for 12 Days might be a good option. Have a quick read yourself to see if there anything you don't want to read out loud but it's basically a set of Christmas Ghost stories and at 14 she might enjoy the slightly more adult stories. You could do some of the recipes as well.
