Audible Plus recommendations

Does anyone have any recommendations for good audiobooks included in the audible plus catalogue?

I like thrillers, detective fiction and science fiction in particular but willing to try anything good!

Thank you 🙂

I'm not sure what's in the audible plus catalogue (how is this different from just audible? I've been a member for years so haven't looked into the changes)

Rivers of London series is fab as is lessons in Chemistry

I've listened to the first Rivers of London book, loved it!

The plus catalogue is the books included in the membership, rather than the ones that you have to use a credit to buy.

According to DH there's lots of classic sci-fi included. Authors like John Wyndham (Day of the Triffids), Arthur C Clarke, Samuel R Delaney and Lois McMaster Bujold (Shards of Honor) He also likes more modern British sci-fi authors like Alastair Reynolds, who has plenty of titles in the Plus Catalogue. There might also be some Adrian Tchaikovsky.

I like non-fiction, particularly The Great Courses, and a good many of their courses are included. I especially like the ones about music.

And there's loads of good classics; DH is listening to Wives and Daughters by Elizabeth Gaskell and I've just read The Return of the Native by Thomas Hardy.

I haven't managed to find any good detective fiction in the Plus Catalogue.

Two more that were included when I read them:

The Wall by Marlen Haushofer (sci-fi)
South Riding by Winifred Holtby (C20th classic)

Thank you @AudiobookListener and may I say what a great username you have!

I've listened to and really enjoyed some of the John Wyndham books - The Crysalids, Day of the Triffids and especially The Kraken Wakes. Bit thank you to you and your husband for the other suggestions.

Off to search... 😄

Find Us, if it's still available. Short but gripping, great twist.

The A Discovery of Witches trilogy by Deborah Harkness is on Audible Plus.

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 30/12/2023 08:59

I'm listening to Night Racen by Sarah Painter. First 5 books of the series are on audible plus.

Nor great but easy enough listening.

I've just finished ' husband and wife' from the plus catalogue which was good.

clpsmum · 30/12/2023 09:05

I really enjoyed strange sally diamond and the seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo

Thanks for starting this thread, @NuNunsKnickers -I hadn't noticed the Plus catalogue before and have just browsed it for the first time.

If you like thrillers, there's a couple of Carl Hiassen books that might be worth trying (black humour). I've also spotted "The conviction of Cora Burns" which sounds intriguing. Plus a massive Sherlock Holmes collection narrated by Stephen Fry (more detective than thriller but might appeal).

QuillBill · 30/12/2023 09:39

I'm listening to Ruth Rendells at the moment.

NunsKnickers · 30/12/2023 09:44

I've been listening to free audiobooks from my library using the libby and borrowbox apps.

Recent highlights include Time and Time Again by Ben Elton and The Girl Who Came out of the Woods by Emily Barr.

I didn't spot this thread the first time round, but it's a great idea. Most of my Audible plus standouts have been non-fiction:
A Belfast Child by John Chambers (growing up in the Troubles)
From Miniskirt to Hijab by Jacqueline Saper (living through the Iranian revolution as a teenager)
Land of a Thousand Hills by Rosamond Halsey Carr (this is so good - life story of an American woman who ended up living most of her life in Rwanda, including the time of the genocide, and particularly interesting is her shift away from a classic colonial mindset)
Amusing Ourselves to Death by Neil Postman (classic rant about TV, but totally relevant and feels amazingly prescient in the age of Trump, internet etc)
Ishi In Two Worlds (about the last member of an indigenous US tribe)
There Are No Children Here (about a US housing project)

I use the e-library for paper books, but don't find it as good for audio as I find the borrowbox app rather clunky, plus tend not to get through them fast enough. I've had a few good ones though.

I've also been listening to audiobooks via Spotify as we've got a family premium account. Much prefer being able to dip into a book & see whether I like it vs the up front commitment with audible

NannyAlipally · 11/04/2024 22:18

I've really enjoyed the Fen murder series by Joy Ellis on the Plus catalogue.

Fifiesta · 21/05/2024 10:00

The Peter Grainger books are brilliant if you like crime genre books.
The narator Gildart Jackson is brilliant, totally captures the character of D C Smith. I have listened to the whole series, and am now listening to his other books.
