Is there anything I can read after The Running Grave, which won't feel like a crushing disappointment?

I've made the mistake of readingTthe Running Grave too quickly, and am now facing the autumn without an amazing book to snuggle down with each evening.

I am convinced that there is nothing out there that will match JKR's Strike series, but please let me know what might come close? I would love some recommendations.

Feel the same way OP. I have about 3 hours left on the Audio book and I am going to be bereft.
I also have the new Ken Follet - Armour and light(?) lined up, and I've still got the last few of the Seven Sisters to go, but I have a feeling they won't hit the strike spot.

TheLongpigs · 13/10/2023 17:28

It's good to have a fellow searcher @YnysMonCrone!

Mick Herron's Slough House books, and all the others (kind of linked). I've just finished the latest SH 'The Secret Hours' and it was SO. SATISFYING.

Anguauberwaldironfoundersson · 13/10/2023 17:33

If you want a series to sink your teeth into then I cant recommend Suanne Laquer's Venery series enough. Book three was just released on Audible today.

It's heavy going at times, especially some of the sexual abuse themes in book two and three. But I promise you won't be disappointed.

My friend recommended them to me and I read the synopsis and felt they probably were not for me. I was so very wrong. Jav, Stef and Geno are everything

Sherrystrull · 13/10/2023 17:38

I hear you! I feel bereft!

LongFaulks · 13/10/2023 17:39

My glumness was so bad after finishing The Running Grave I decided I wasn’t even going to try to match it with something from the same genre.

And this is why I find myself second book down in YA fantasy romance.
Who knew this was the bacon sandwich cure to my book hangover. Hot shagging elves.

KyliesPencilCollection · 13/10/2023 17:43

I'm aching! But just started the new Ken Follett too.

I'm in love with Cormoran Strike!

Kilopascal · 13/10/2023 17:47

Have you already read Dorothy Sayers and/or Dorothy Dunnett?

Thanks for this! Book 1 is only £2.50 on Amazon so I'll give it a go!

Thanks so much. This sounds very intriguing. It's on the list!

Me too. Fabulous ending but hard to step out of and back into real life!

I think there is a lot of wisdom in this. I wondered if i should read one of my many non-fiction to-read books, but I've got so much going on at the moment that I don't have it in me.

You sound like you've aced it though!!

I've not read either. Which do you recommend and where should I start?

Oh no! I’m only at the beginning of the audiobook and thoroughly enjoying it, now I’m thinking I need to pace myself! Looking forward to noting everyone’s follow up suggestions!

Passepartoute · 13/10/2023 19:00

Susan Hill's Simon Serrailler series; Peter James' Roy Grace books (but be warned, some of the violence is pretty graphic - I've learned to skim those bits).

evtheria · 13/10/2023 19:11

Hope you enjoy! The books are very popular, so you can usually get them off library too. I'm actually starting The Running Grave now, it's finally my turn in the reservations waitlist!

EfficientlyDecluttering · 13/10/2023 19:15

I’m about 6 hours from the end of the audible of The Running Grave and worried about the same thing. The Slough House books are a good idea, I loved the TV adaptations.

andtheworldrollson · 13/10/2023 19:27

I have gone back to old favourites for a while

Rapunzel91 · 13/10/2023 23:03

I feel the same OP. I couldn’t put it down and can’t seem to find anything else as gripping!

Im also doing an accounting course and oh my the books are extra dry now!

SingingSands · 13/10/2023 23:12

Watching with interest. DH is a huge fan, he listens on Audible and told me sadly that he only has 5 hours of the book left to listen to. He's preemptively sad about it finishing 😆

SoggyDoggyWalks · 13/10/2023 23:18

I’ve just finished TRG (read it really fast, then slower) and have started reading the Strike series from the beginning again as can’t find anything else I’m interested in starting just now. Reading Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban to my daughter too, so feeling slightly J K Rowling obsessive. Sure it will pass.

Louloubelles · 13/10/2023 23:26

Kate Atkinson - detective Jackson Brodie books are excellent. I love her books and the JKR Strike series.

No. Sorry. Get writing Jo
