Can anyone recommend for this age group. She's not a great reader we are trying to get some choices to engage her. Thank you

I think Meg Rosoff is good for that age. The Bride's Farewell is a good one to start with - bit thought provoking.

What are her interests? Fiction or non fiction?

Standard stuff could be things like Hunger Games or Twilight as they are pretty generic teen stuff and let's will have read them, there are films to watch and so on.

Books Up North has a young reader review panel so their website has lots of reviews that are written by the young people who are the intended audience which could be good inspiration. Disclaimer: my dd reviews books for them. The kids don't get paid, just get to keep the books so they are/should be honest. Though the words "advance reader copy" and "unedited proof" are guaranteed to make dd squeal with joy.

Where the Light goes is a good one, it is all about grief but the character who dies is a celeb which I think helps to draw teens who spend all their time consuming media and celeb stuff in.

Or murder mystery stuff like A Good Girl's Guide to Murder.

If she's "typical teen" then the above are all fairly typical, easy read stuff. Easy to pick up and get in to and with the exception of Twilight shit not badly written.

I can suggest lots of fantasy too but depends what your dd wants, could possibly turn her off. I would be wary of trying classics too if she's not used to reading. Dd is getting in to some Austen etc but the language is so different fro.whatv they are used to these days. I think we grew up reading things like Secret Garden so the language was similar but the same can't be said of most kids now. And I include my own book worm dd and ds2 in that, it isn't a dig.

Ooh thank you both. Great suggestions. We are going to try and encourage her to read a bit every day.

Does she have any particular interests?

Non fiction might be a way in

Otherwise some books that either I or my nieces have liked at that sort of age (you would want to check the plots / content warnings in case you think they’re too mature for your DD)

Louise Rennison - Confessions of Georgia Nicholson series, Misadventures of Tallulah Casey series

Suzanne Collins - Hunger Games series

Alice Oseman - Heartstopper series

Ann Brashares - Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants

Malorie Blackman - Noughts and Crosses series

Holly Jackson - A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder

John Green - Looking for Alaska, A Fault in Our Stars, An Abundance of Katherines,

Meg Cabot - The Princess Diaries series, The Mediator series, 1-800-WHERE-R-U series, All American Girl series, Avalon High Series (Can you tell I really liked Meg Cabot books…)

E Lockhart - We were liars

Cassandra Clare - Mortal Instrumenrs series

Perhaps she's not interestsd in reading.

I think she could be if we could encourage the habit.

I’ve just got my 13 year old the series by Tahereh Mafi- Starts with Shatter Me

She’s loving it.

She gets so much home work that my view is that a bit of escapism when reading for pleasure is needed. At this age I’m not going to get too hung up on what she’s reading as long as she is reading.

You could try some graphic novels? There is a new comic strip edition of the babysitter club books which she might enjoy.
