I love love loved "The Other Bennet Sister" (Janice Hadlow) telling Mary's story, and am currently reading "Charlotte" (Helen Moffett) about Charlotte Lucas (Collins) story.

"Longbourn" is on my radar but are there any other P & P spin offs that you'd recommend?

Eligible by Curtis Sittenfeld is fabulous!

AbacusAvocado · 28/09/2023 20:48

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.

Sittingintheshade · 28/09/2023 20:49

Death Comes To Pemberley!

I loved Longbourne, been an age since I read it!

cherryassam · 28/09/2023 20:54

Was coming on to say Eligible too!

Death Comes to Pemberley by PD James is great

As is Ayesha at Last by Uzma Jalaluddin

Some of these are a bit silly but as someone who loves P&P I drink them up:

Unequal Affections by Lara Ormiston
Mr Darcy’s Diary by Amanda Grange
Fortune and Felicity by Monica Fairview
Only Mr Darcy Will Do by Kara Louise
Pirates and Prejudice by Kara Louise
Pamela Aidan’s Fitzwilliam Darcy series
Carrie Bebris’ Mr and Mrs Darcy Mysteries series
An Arranged Marriage by Jan Hahn
The Journey by Jan Hahn

The independence of Miss Mary Bennett. By the woman who wrote the thorn birds.

I've just bought Pride and Premeditation by Tirzah Price

When a scandalous murder shocks London high society, seventeen-year-old aspiring lawyer Lizzie Bennet seizes the opportunity to prove herself, despite the interference of Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, the stern young heir to the prestigious firm Pemberley Associates.
Convinced the authorities have imprisoned the wrong person, Lizzie vows to solve the murder alone. But as the case—and her feelings for Darcy—become more complicated, Lizzie discovers that her dream job could make her happy, but it might also get her killed.

There are loads on Amazon - I put in Pride & Prejudice variations

FuzzyPuffling · 28/09/2023 21:20

Thank you all.

I Googled "P&,P spin offs" but I have no idea if they are any good or not, hence asking for recommendations.

"Eligible" sounds like a good 'un, and i really ought to do "Death Comes to Pemberley" as PDJames was a friend of my father's!

Mr Darcy’s Diary by Maya Slater (different to the other book of the same name mentioned above) is brilliant. I’ve got it on audible read by David Rintoul who played Mr Darcy in the earlier TV adaptation. I loved the Other Bennet Sister too.

I hated Pride & Prejudice & Zombies - it was a clever idea but it read like the author barely knew the book. Mr Bennet was all about equipping his daughters to succeed in the world - def not the benign/not so benign neglect of the original Mr B! None of the characters seemed at all related to the book characters.

Lost in Austen!

I fell into the black hole of JAFF during lockdown. There are a huge amount of P&P variations available on Amazon, although the quality can be variable. A lot of authors self-publish and some could really use the help of a good editor. Others are more professionally published by Austen-centric small presses.

Some authors I like are Amy D’Orazio, Linda Wells, Mary Smythe, Julie Cooper, Abigail Reynolds, LL Diamond, J Dawn King, Frances Reynolds, C P Odom and Elizabeth Adams.

You might like to take a look at the Austenesque Reviews blog - which does a monthly round up of the newly published titles. If you want to dive into online fanfic, rather than published, one of the main sites is A Happy Assembly - a lot of authors post here first before publishing.

JustAMinutePleass · 28/09/2023 21:43

Those are all fanfiction - you can find them on various sites if you look hard enough.

highlandcoo · 28/09/2023 23:24

I really enjoyed The Other Bennet Sister too.

Longbourn was OK.

I was very disappointed by Death in Pemberley although I like PD James as a crime writer; this must have been published based on her existing reputation as it's extremely poor and the characters bear no relation to the originals imo.

Lost in Austen is good fun if you can find the DVD.

Another vote for Death Comes to Pemberley!

MsAmerica · 29/09/2023 01:28

I now can't bear the idea of Austen "spin-offs" but I did once enjoy Joan Aikin's completion of Sanditon, and I read a few pages of her Jane Fairfax, which seemed remarkably deft.

@JustAMinutePleass where do we find the fan fiction I often hear it mentioned but wouldn’t know where to start looking? Tia

GreenCereal · 29/09/2023 01:38

Loved Longbourn.

Also thought What Kitty Did Next was cute.

Thank you!!!!! There's three random books that I can only remember vague details from that bug me on occasion. The other Bennett sister is one 😊.

Now if you've any idea about a book involving a mole hole being dug so that the lady could trip 'accidently' but instead was caught out by the neighbour who then actually trips and becomes very ill I would be most grateful 🤣. She ends up marrying the neigbour (who I assume is titled) of course.

The third is the vaguest involving a girl staying with her aunt, possibly unhappily... aunt possibly becomes ill so niece has to drive her car...

Anyway apologies for the random post on your thread!

FuzzyPuffling · 04/10/2023 21:41

Nope, no idea on those, LadyBeth but I like your style ( of reading!)

I thought that The Other Bennet Sister got better but the first section really dragged, and was far too long, and I'm normally quite tolerant of long, slow books but the pacing on this was not great. Death Comes to Pemberley wasn't PD James at her best! I liked Longbourn, which was focused on characters who are behind the scenes - the servants.

AutumnCrow · 07/10/2023 04:55

I thought that Death Comes to Pemberley by PD James was one of the worst books ever written.

thatsnotmywean · 07/10/2023 06:21

I loved lost in austen!

Ohthepressure · 07/10/2023 06:34

Emma Tennant - Pemberley and An Unequal Marriage. Both reasonably good, although I read them ages ago.

cathyandclaire · 07/10/2023 06:54

@LadyBeth I think the mole hole book is Just Like Heaven by Julia Quinn. It's one of her Bridgerton adjacent books. It stuck in my mind too!

hexsnidgett · 07/10/2023 07:12

I really enjoyed the Amanda Grange ones, if they are still available, she did a whole series of books from the male characters' point of view. Much more successful I think than the retellings.
