I'm only about halfway through this wonderful book - did anyone else love it?

I think she has the most incredible ear for dialogue. Very funny.

spacedonkey · 16/12/2004 15:40

zubb · 16/12/2004 15:41

I really enjoyed it, was easy to read from what I remember.

nailpolish · 16/12/2004 15:41

sorry to divert but since you are such a bookworm sm, do you know the name and author of the book about a girl who is murdered by a man and then watches her family after the murder? is it any good?

no havent read the book you mentioned btw!

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 16/12/2004 15:41

I found it pretty hard going and lost interest towards the end.

bakedpotatohoho · 16/12/2004 15:42

isn't that the lovely bones, NP?

re white teeth: hated it too! just got stuck at the start.

anorak · 16/12/2004 15:42

I enjoyed it, because I used to live in Willesden and that brought it to life for me.

bundleofyulelogs · 16/12/2004 15:42

zubb isn't that Lovely Bones (sometimes called lonely bones?) haven't read it a friend told me it was a tad sentimental

nailpolish · 16/12/2004 15:42

yes, thanks bp

who is the author though?

and is it any good

sorry sm

bundleofyulelogs · 16/12/2004 15:43

found it completely unconvincing and none of the characters drew me in.

bundleofyulelogs · 16/12/2004 15:43

alice sebold

bakedpotatohoho · 16/12/2004 15:43

alice sebold. haven't read it though.

spacedonkey · 16/12/2004 15:43

winnie1 · 16/12/2004 15:44

nailpolish to answer your question it is Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold.

Spacedonkey, I loved White Teeth too.

winnie1 · 16/12/2004 15:45

Posts crossed. I would recommend Lovely Bones a bizarrely 'enjoyable' read.

spacedonkey · 16/12/2004 15:45

I bloody wish I could write like that. She's so young as well

Hated White Teeth - gave up a quarter of the way in. Thought Lovely Bones was a great read.

donnie · 16/12/2004 18:32

I quite enjoyed White Teeth but felt it was very self consciously Guardianista, if you know what I mean...a bit precious. Funny though, and better than anything I could do so hats off to Zadie smith. Still haven't read Lovely Bones, cannot decide if it will be too awful and shocking for me!Anyone want to persuade me?

spacedonkey · 16/12/2004 18:34

Interesting to hear everyone's opinions about it, I'm surprised so many people disliked it!

OP posts:
Caribbeanqueen · 16/12/2004 18:41

I really enjoyed White Teeth, but was a bit disappointed by the ending.

expatkat · 16/12/2004 18:58

Ditto caribbeanqueen: I loved it, except for the ending.

popsycal · 16/12/2004 19:23

I loved it too,.,,
there is a Mner who i believe used to go to uni with the author....

hoxtonturkey · 16/12/2004 19:41

i really liked it too. though agree that the ending isn't all it could have been. she was at cambridge at the same time as me (different college) - but i don't think i'm the person popsy is referring to. hmmmm, now i'm intrigued...

popsycal · 16/12/2004 19:42

no its not you hoxton......someone was in the same college at the same time....
