I need your help! My mum has dementia and can no longer read (she’s always been an avid reader 😕) but can do word searches.

Ive been making personalised word searches for her. She loved the Chalet School books. I never got into them, much to her disappointment!

Im trying to come up with ten-twelve words/phrases linked to the books. Any help really appreciated!

It's not cheek, it's just Mary Lou

EmpressaurusOfCats · 25/09/2023 12:30

Are lists ok as well as phrases?
The Maynard offspring for instance:
Len
Con
Margot
Stephen
Charles
Mike
Felicity
Felix
Cecil
Phil
Geoff

SprogTakesAQuarry · 25/09/2023 12:35

Oh that’s awesome - thank you! Lists are also good. The more the better! So I could do a whole Maynard offspring word search? Am I right that there’s a Jo/Joey who is a main Maynard?

OP posts:
TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 25/09/2023 12:38

Book titles?

Rivals
Eustacia
New House
Exploits
Head Girl
Exile
Highland Twins
Lavender Laughs
Gay From China
Redheads
Triplets
Oberland

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 25/09/2023 12:41

Character names - you could do either first names, surnames or both.

Joey Bettany
Madge Russell
Robin Humphries
Len Maynard
Mary-Lou Trelawney
Hilda Annersley
Nell Wilson
Grizel Cochrane
Simone Lecoutier
Frieda Mensch
Marie von Eschenau
Cornelia Flower
Margia Stevens

SprogTakesAQuarry · 25/09/2023 12:50

So many - thank you.

I can do lots of different ones. So I could do character names, book titles, anything else.

So for Antonia Forest (my passion!) I have done different word searches on: school book titles, non-school titles, Marlow family names, non-family characters. But also thinking outside the box such as Shepherds Boy, Kitchen and Jumble, Third Remove etc. Been trying to think of Kingscote baddies too but can only think of Lois, Pomona and Marie and feel terribly guilty adding Marie to that list which is a huge testament to just how awesome AF is.

Back to Chalet School:
Maynards thanks @EmpressaurusOfCats
Main Characters thanks @TooExtraImmatureCheddar
Book titles thanks again @TooExtraImmatureCheddar

Am I right that locations were a huge part of the series?

And @ZacharinaQuack is that quote re Mary Lou a v famous one? I can include phrases too.

OP posts:
ZacharinaQuack · 25/09/2023 12:59

Yes, people say it all the time! Mary Lou says something massively inappropriate, and all the teachers and prefects stand around discussing how if it were anyone else, it would be really rude, but...

SprogTakesAQuarry · 25/09/2023 13:06

Thanks @ZacharinaQuack that will make my mum smile!

Names of Head Girls
names of mistresses
names of male characters

am about to go out, so can't supply lists, will do when I get back, if no-one else has by then.

SprogTakesAQuarry · 25/09/2023 14:30

Thanks @HonoriaLucastaDelagardie that’s awesome. Love the idea of head girls - don’t feel obliged to update if life gets in the way. I’ll take a look at wiki if needed!

OP posts:
FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 25/09/2023 15:57

I'll read one later and come back to you.

In the meantime to describe Joey Maynard;
'a peal of golden laughter'
'dancing black eyes'.

AppropriateAdult · 25/09/2023 16:45

What a lovely idea!

Locations:
Tyrol
Tiernsee
Briesau
Spärtz
Innsbrück
Sonnalpe
Oberammergau
Guernsey
Armiford
Oberland
Görnetz Platz
Welsen

PermanentTemporary · 25/09/2023 16:53

Please sell these on Etsy when you're done!

Chalet fabrics and colours? (May need correcting by others)
Flame tie
Brown pinafore
Cretonne
Cornflower
Poppy

'Jonquil-bespattered cretonne' has stayed in my mind as this completely characteristic phrase that no children's book now would ever use. But I'm actually not sure it was ever jonquils.

SprogTakesAQuarry · 25/09/2023 16:54

Thanks for the location list @AppropriateAdult

Oh my - fabrics and colours sounds fab. I never knew there was such a wealth of CS terminology to be mined!

There are quite a few chalet school quizzes on here which might be good inspiration :

Cor blimey @GetTheGoodLookingGuy that’s so many grad girls! Thanks so much. I knew there were a lot of CH books, but even so I’m taken aback. I think I’ll do two head girl word searches.

Thanks also @merryhouse , @Sunshinedahlias , @EmpressaurusOfCats such great ideas. I’ve just finished a Cynthia Voigt puzzle, one connected to my mums home town and another with her favourite cookery authors.

Tomorrow will be a Chalet School athon. Thank you everyone for your help with this. It’s really appreciated.

Thanks also to anyone I’ve missed out. I didn’t expect so many great replies.

Kilopascal · 25/09/2023 21:34

My first thought was the St Bernards, Rufus and Bruno

letmesailletmesail · 25/09/2023 21:34

Names of plays?
Names of doctors at the San?
Names of houses (lived in by the family rather than of the school)
Names of bodies of water fallen into by various pupils?!
Names of children randomly adopted by the school/Joey Maynard or who accidentally end up at the school when they should be somewhere else entirely?

CatHerderSupreme · 22/03/2024 20:55

I know I’m a bit late to this thread, but the word searches etc are a wonderful idea!

Phrases that spring to mind are:

Our One And Only Mary-Lou

Still, grey and to all appearances dead (whenever anyone has any sort of accident)

Solid Lump of Comfort, said by Jo Maynard (nee Bettany) about her husband Jack

Spineless jellyfish (possibly my personal favourite!)
