Book Festivals - I think I need to go to more

Anyone had a great time at one this year.
I spent yesterday at the North Cornwall one and it was just lovely.
Gorgeous venue, lovely people, laid back, great lunch.
Saw Natalie Haynes - feminist greek Goddesses hosted in the church
Ann Cleeves - excellent
A book group discussion on Thunderclap because the author Laura Cumming had Covid
Linda Grant - who has made me enjoy her book a lot more by knowing her background.

I read a couple before and feel inspired to pick up others. It was just a lovely day.

Any recommendations for other festivals? What would be the Glastonbury of literature? And are the 'big' festivals just too much hard work?

If you liked crime then it’s got to be Harrogate - brilliant festival

Hay festival in Hay-on-Wye. The main summer festival is over a couple of weeks in May June time but they also have a smaller winter festival too.

I'd welcome hearing anyone's recommendations, hoping for a festival that fits in with May / June time next year......

Chiplitfest in Chipping Norton is brilliant. Wide range of things over the weekend, usually April.

ShanghaiDiva · 24/09/2023 10:19

Budleigh Salterton in September.

Wimbledon in October.

mrssnorkmaidenmoomin · 24/09/2023 18:27

Cliveden is brilliant. Great if you like history.

BookSquirrel · 24/09/2023 18:40

Thank you everyone.
I shall be putting my name on a few mailing lists. A lot more than I was ever aware of.

Anyone seen Jonathan Coe or Margaret Attwood? Worth a longer journey?

@mrssnorkmaidenmoomin I was born just a mile from Cliveden!

The Du Maurier festival is usually in May each year in Fowey, Cornwall.

KitchenSinkLlama · 24/09/2023 18:47

I'm going to an event at the Henley Literary Festival this week.

I've just had a check and indeed my two closest cities have one, as do some of the towns. So I'd just check where you fancy visiting and see if they have a festival.

Poblano · 24/09/2023 20:19

Hay festival is amazing. I've seen Margaret Attwood there twice.

Helpwhatwouldyoudonext · 01/10/2023 21:52

Hi,
Does anyone know where Anne Enright is speaking soon?

JaninaDuszejko · 02/10/2023 10:28

@Helpwhatwouldyoudonext Ifound the following, there's probably more:

Cheltenham 14 Oct
Wimbledon 15 Oct
Cambridge on 17 Oct
Dublin 12 Nov
British Library 26 Nov
