Any horror books that are a must read?

I read a lot of horror in 90s. King, Koontz, Herbert, Barker etc

I've just started reading the genre again with Hex by Thomas Olde Heuvelt.

Does anyone have any other authors that they could recommend, please?

Any other similar recommendations @Orangewall ?

I wish!
Pines had a similar claustrophobic feel to it and very atmospheric.
Cunning Folk and the Reddening.
I’m drawing an absolute blank of everything that I’ve read in the last year now! The horrorlit subreddit is quite good for recommendations and worth checking out x

Ghosts - Noel hynd

I think Slade House, while not quite as 'horror' certainly has the dread aspect.

Have you read Thin Air by Michelle Paver? It is so creepy, and it stayed with me for days.

Still re read it every year though.

No, but thank you for mentionning it, I'll be on the watch out for a second hand version.

I gave my copy of this book to my friend who loves horror. She called me when she finished and said 'Get this book out of my house right now!' Grin

Naomis room. I love horror, books and films. It's my favourite genre I don't get scared easily. But oh my goodness this book absolutely chilled me. I had to sleep with the main light on for a week.

Not sure why the quote didn't work with my post above

Inspired by this thread I've just ordered Wakenhyrst and Thin Air by Michelle Paver, I'm excited for them to arrive. I read Dark Matter in 2016 and enjoyed it, I'm not sure why I haven't read anything else by this author.

squareyedannie · 30/09/2023 20:16

Halfway through, The Chill by Scott Carson. I'm really enjoying it so far.

Just finished, Starve Acre and Naomi's Room.
Both are really well written. I think Starve's ending will stay with me for a while!

Has anyone read Earthlings by Sayak Murata? Curious to know if it fits in the horror genre!

CocoPlum · 04/10/2023 09:55

I'm reading How to Sell a Haunted House by Grady Hendrix and it is terrifying, visceral, creepy but also hilarious. I'll be laughing then the next page have to stop reading!

LegArmpits · 04/10/2023 10:00

Flesh and Blood by Graham Masterton, stayed with me for over 25 years. Some of his other stuff is good too, Famine and Mirror are worth a read.

Not a big horror reader but I enjoyed Gallows Hill by Darcey Coates. One particular scene <shudders>.

I just downloaded this one 🤞

ManAboutTown · 06/10/2023 07:53

Kazuo Ishiguro - Never Let Me Go

Described as the worst horror story ever because the characters don't know they are in one and you don't realise it's a horror story until a long way in

pointythings · 06/10/2023 19:35

I like early Phil Rickman - Candlenight, Crybbe, December, the Man in the Moss.

Dracula, the original by Bram Stoker. Get past some of the language of it’s time, and it is a tale par excellence.

OuiOuiMonAmiJeMappelleLafayette · 14/11/2023 23:33

Darkness Tell Us by Richard Laymon

I'd recommend Susan Hill's "Woman in Black" if you hadn't read it.

This. It's sitting in my car at the moment as I don't want it in the house 😳

MaudGone · 14/11/2023 23:58

Shirley Jackson - "The Haunting of Hill House". Very influential & much imitated.

"The Magician" by Somerset Maugham.

orangelotus · 15/11/2023 19:24

The silent companions - very creepy

Screamingabdabz · 15/11/2023 19:31

Some of my faves have already been mentioned but I’d just add the Felix Castor series by Mike Carey.

PammieDooveOrangeJoof · 15/11/2023 19:32

I read Hex off the back of this thread and bloody loved it! Thought it was the scariest thing I’ve read in years.
