When I go on holiday I always like to have a book or two that is set where I am, or linked to that country in some way. Any ideas? Unfortunately I’ve read American Dirt 😔 Wish I could forget it and re-read!

Gods of Jade and Shadow, Sylvia Moreno-Garcia

MissPettigrewIsWFH · 05/09/2023 20:17

I do that too! Try the website Trip Fiction to put in a country and see the suggestions. Or go to Stanford's site (map makers) and filter by country and then 'fiction' for quality ideas.

The Lacuna by Kingsolver is brilliant

Chilli81 · 05/09/2023 20:27

Like water for chocolate by Laura Esquivel. There's a film version too.

Thank you for these suggestions! And thank you so much for those tips @MissPettigrewIsWFH - that will be life changing!

Have a wonderful trip. I love this immersing myself in a place, from the comfort of my book.

ParkingfineWhine · 05/09/2023 21:22

I second Like Water for Chocolate 👍🏻
Whereabouts in Mexico are you going?

Twoshoesnewshoes · 05/09/2023 21:38

The Border Trilogy by Cormac McCarthy

PARunnerGirl · 05/09/2023 21:40

Thank you @ElleDeeCB - I have downloaded it. It’s a resort holiday on the Riviera Maya, so nothing too adventurous tbh! We will likely visit Tulum and/ or Chichen-Itza and also maybe Rio Secreto. I’ve never been before but my boyfriend has.

Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia was a good read, with a nice feisty protagonist.

Tulum ruins are nice but if you do them and Chichen Itza, then do them first as Chichen Itza is on a completely different level. Seeing the pyramid for the first time blows you away. The first time we went you could still climb it.

Also depending on what time of year you're going hopefully you're aware of the sargassum issues.

JaneyGee · 06/09/2023 16:05

Isn't Malcolm Lowry's Under the Volcano set in Mexico?

ElleDeeCB · 06/09/2023 19:12

The Hearing Trumpet by Leonora Carrington (for some UK-Mexico cultural exchange). Or since you’re by the Caribbean perhaps something like Wide Sargasso Sea, which I read on a trip there.

Death Comes for the Archbishop by Willa Cather.
Which sort of fits your requirements, as it's set in New Mexico, when the border with the USA hadn't been drawn.
It's set in the 19th century. The Catholic Church, isolated from Rome, is developing in unorthodox ways and a priest is sent out to set them right. He travels round the area.
My goodness I've made it sound dull, but I enjoyed it so much that a based a holiday on travelling around the area.
