An extended, health-related period of bedrest is looming.

Prior warning: I average 150 - 200 books a year some of them are audio books, even so that's thousands of books. If I reply saying thank you, I have read it' I'm not being ungrateful.

Life is too short pile:
I'm sorry, I don't like sci-fi or fantasy.

With all of the above in mind, please can you recommend your desert island books?

In particular I enjoy mystery/thriller/suspense. I like good family dramas, tear-jerkers, occasionally romances, I mean Marian Keyes, not the Mills and Boon type.
Additionally, I like T Jenkins Reid and other women's genre fiction, though I prefer that kind of fiction with some bite. Dawn O'Porter and Nicholas Nicholls (the One Day author) and similar.

Series, single books, any good ideas (and painkillers) appreciated.

I've been reading lots of Freida Mcfadden lately, have a look at her books, they're on kindle unlimited if you have it

Wallabyone · 04/09/2023 01:27

I recently read Lessons by Ian McEwan and really enjoyed it.

The Hand that First held mine by Maggie O'Farrell.

highlandcoo · 04/09/2023 01:31

For thrillers, Christopher Brookmyre. Dark dry Scottish humour and gripping plots. Entertaining rather than believable. And he also writes Victorian murder mysteries with his wife, as Ambrose Parry - worth a read.

I'm guessing you've read American Dirt already?

For mysteries, The Observations and Gillespie and I by Jane Harris. And Fingersmith by Sarah Waters. Also Snow Falling on Cedars

Crime - Ann Cleeves' Shetland novels and Peter May's Black House trilogy. Jane Harper's Australian crime books are good too. Kate Atkinson's Jackson Brodie series.

For family dramas, The Cazalet Chronicles are classic.
Or Ann Patchett The Dutch House.
Crow Lake by Mary Lawson.
Hundred Years trilogy Jane Smiley.

Romance - My Dear I Wanted To Tell You by Louisa Young is a poignant love story but much more than that.

So, so many more but it's late. I'll get back to you .. and all the best for your time recuperating 🙂

Fifireee · 04/09/2023 05:05

Jane Harper - The Dry ( a trilogy about an outback Policeman)

The Wolf Den - Elodie Harper (Aboit a Pompeii brothel)

Rivers of London series - Ben Aaronovitch (A police, ghosts, river goddesses series - not my usual thing but brilliant)

Robert Galbraith series

CrispsnDips · 04/09/2023 05:22

As Fifireee has said: Jane Harper - The Dry (brilliant)

just started a book by Sheila O’Flanagan - Anyone But Him (good so far)

I've just read the Seven Sisters series by Lucinda Riley. Hugely recommend if you haven't discovered them already.

MaudGone · 04/09/2023 22:22

Ghosted by Jenn Ashworth. Literary novel, but with mystery elements - plot revolves around a missing person.

TooYoungToKnowTooOldToCare · 05/09/2023 06:25

Thank you for your well wishes and suggestions.
Tomorrow is the big day, if you pray please pray, if you cross your fingers or believe in luck, please do whatever you do.

Thank you for all of the suggestions. I'm going to go through them, please don't be offended if I comment negatively on your suggestions, my head is wibbly today. When I am nervous or worried I can inadvertently lack tact.

Next week post coming up.

Firstly, I wrote Nicholas Nicholls in my original post, that should have said David Nicholls.

@Peachyscream thank you, I'll take a look and see what I think.

@Wallabyone I have read The Hand That First Held mine a while ago and I liked it. Trigger warning, baby loss When I was first pregnant in 1997 I read A Child In Time it upset me a lot. Not long after that at 35 weeks, my baby was born asleep. Understandably, I was devastated, somehow Ian McEwan is eternally associated in my mind with that awful time.

Thank you for your suggestions, I really do

Daisy Darker by Alice Feeney

Best book I read for a while.

Riverlee · 05/09/2023 14:16

Books I’ve really enjoyed that I think you’ll enjoy are:

Three Hours - Rosemary Lupton

Hostage - Claire Mackintosh

The Cult - Abby Davies

Robert Harris - writes books set in different historical periods, a lot are WWII. Well written and good stories - currently reading Enigma. Worth trying, even if you don’t go for these types of books.

Patricia Fisher series - Steve Higgs - okay, i admit it’s a cozy mystery series, but the characters get under your skin (in a good way), and the stories are actually quite good. Good for something if you want a bit lighter.

The Heatwave - Kate Riodan

Seven Sisters - loved this series

Maeve Binchey for some gentle reading, good stories well written.

Riverlee · 05/09/2023 14:16

Oh, forgot to say, wishing all the best for today.

Riverbananacarrot · 05/09/2023 14:19

Anything by Nalini Singh - it is a sci fi romance genre though brilliantly written.
