Why are books generally stated on here as a light read?

It's a book. I am reading it. Why does it have to be stated as a light read. I have tried to read loads of what is called 'real' literature and been extremely bored by it. This really really annoys me. A book is a book and I am about a quarter of the way through the bible, but sadly the 'light' version.

lol...why does it bother you?
I couldn't care less what people think about the books that I read and enjoy...

Who says light is a derogatory term? It';s just a classification to help people like you and I find books we'll actually enjoy (I only like funny). Every book style has its purpose.

lots of the chick lit stuff I just don't remember after I've read it, I like it when I read it, it's just pretty forgettable.
maybe that's why it's called a light read

I don't see why describing a book as "light" is seen as a criticism. I enjoy the classics but I wouldn't take a book by Tolstoy or the Brontes on holiday with me as I want something that requires less concentration. I also want something that won't depress me.

As Buckets said: it is a classification. Some poetry is described as "light verse". Certain operas are described as "light opera".

Please enjoy your read and don't worry about it.

I think some people on here have to call a book they enjoy a light read, in case other poeple despise them for reading it!
"oh, I love Marian Keyes, total trash but ok on holiday" Just admit it, hun - you LOVE Marian Keyes, cos she is a good storyteller!
