About ten years ago, I went to a local event where there was a newly published author (male, Scottish, about 40ish) who’d written a mystery book, might have been a murder, not sure).

It was set in Scotland, inner city, Glasgow or Edinburgh. One of the main characters was a middle aged woman, on benefits, who lived in a flat (scheme/close?). Everyone underestimates her though she’s very bright, and she’s generally ignored/overlooked, but because of this, and the fact that she’s a total CF, she talks her way into all sorts of places and gains information that more mainstream people couldn’t.

It was quite funny, and I wanted to look out for more in the series, but I forgot all about it until recently. Anyone got any ideas, please?

Not the book you were looking for, but ‘The Windsor Knot’ reminds me of it. Basically, the Queen manages to solve mysteries because people overlook the fact that she is there, and so she sees and hears things which people don’t realise. It’s a really good book.

Sounds good. Yes, a similar premise. I think women of a certain age identify with the idea of being invisible. Thanks.
