How much time do you spend reading each day?

For pleasure I mean, and where/how do you do it? I want to read for two or more hours a day, usually with a kindle (sometimes a paperback) but I get uncomfortable. If I read in bed I fall asleep!

I read in the bath, each evening about 30/40 minutes or if I sit in the garden I will read there, like you if I read in bed it just sends me to sleep.

LMNT · 21/07/2023 19:58

I get up early to read whilst having a massive coffee.

Then I read for 15 minutes after lunch and again in the evening on the sofa for an hour and in bed for half an hour.

I try to get a couple of hours in a day. I’ve got really bad sciatic pain at the moment and my concentration is zero so I’ve been browsing MN instead.

I have no way of timing it, because I don't set aside time for reading. I just read, constantly. I especially read while in transit, such as riding a bus, or while waiting, such as at a doctor's office. I'm guessing that it adds up to 1-2 hours a day, but I have no idea.
But I'm usually not reading one single thing. For instance, my transit reading tends to be periodicals, not books.

I read to sleep every night, about 30 mins -an hour.

Hailingfrequenciesopen · 21/07/2023 20:12

I get tied in knots with book fomo! Having said that I go through periods of not reading a page then I'll go at it full throttle and read 2 or 3 books at a time. I always read magazines etc. so I guess I read regularly.

People who post I read a book a day etc. can do them but I don't feel pressure from them. I know it can bother others. We all read at our own speed.

RaraRachael · 21/07/2023 20:30

I used to read every night before I fell asleep usually about 45 minutes.

Now that I'm retired, if there's nothing I want to watch on TV, I will read. It's nice having time to do this as OH is the sort of person who has the telly on ALL the time even if he isn't particularly interested in what's on.

WildCherryBlossom · 22/07/2023 05:19

In an ideal world I would probably read for up to an hour in bed but the reality (particularly in term time) is that evenings are busy and my children need a lot of my time to get settled to bed so i end up not reading. Last year I got into a routine of reading for a little while straight after lunch. That works really well. I feel much more settled and happy if I spend time reading. I also take my book with me when I'm out and about and if I have a spare 15 minutes read that rather than browsing aimlessly on my phone.

LucyGru · 22/07/2023 05:25

I only read in bed before I sleep. If I'm shattered I read for 0 minutes. If I manage to pick my book up it's probably 20 - 40 minutes.

The exception is when I'm camping in the summer; then I read for hours every day.

MeMyCatsAndMyBooks · 22/07/2023 05:27

Depends on how busy I am. Usually around 1-2 hours a day though if I'm not busy.

GalileoHumpkins · 22/07/2023 08:38

At least two hours, I'm usually up first so I make a cup of tea and read then. I read at the dining table throughout the day when I have time, I go up to bed first specifically to read.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 22/07/2023 08:40

I try to read a couple of hours each evening but in the week I have hobbies and sometimes at the weekend DH or DD will want to watch something with me. It also depends how good the book is I'm reading. If it's really good I'll be more likely to put down my phone and read!

Teleporno · 24/07/2023 07:43

Are there any part-time working or stay-at-home mothers with little kids who manage to read more than 90 minutes a day?

Coastalcreeksider · 24/07/2023 08:08

When I go to bed usually, around 10-20 minutes depending how tired I am. Occasionally I read in the afternoon lounging on the bed for an hour or so.

When the weather is nice (remember June?) I read in the garden for anywhere from half an hour to a couple of hours. My patio is in the shade so it's a nice place to sit without the sun beating down on you.

mizu · 24/07/2023 08:21

Usually bedtime for half an hour. But currently on holiday and have been mainlining books. On 3rd and love that I have time to read and read.

RoseMartha · 24/07/2023 08:30

Depends some days none somedays an hour in bed at night or in the evening

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 24/07/2023 08:45

A couple of hours a day at least. In winter I go to bed early so I can get a couple of hours in, always have a book handy if I'm travelling and I'm trying to start the habit of at least half an hour first thing in the morning instead of MN.

InaHamletinaShire · 24/07/2023 09:13

I was very fortunate to take early retirement, so am able to read after lunch most days, as well as before bed. I also have a lovely hour or so in bed on a Saturday morning while my DH does some exercises downstairs.

beguilingeyes · 24/07/2023 10:18

Not enough! I spend way too much time online. I can't get to sleep without reading, but I fall asleep much too quickly. Pre-internet I read all the time.
A lot depends on the book though. Some I can get through in a day or two. i envy people who can read more than one book at a time. I've never been able to do that.

RCOR · 25/07/2023 09:30

I found that I had to switch to audio books. I just couldn't make time to read and would fall asleep if I read at night. I felt like I was cheating at the start but I couldn't go back now. I can get on with mindless tasks like housework, or out for a walk or long drive and listen. It's fab.

I use my local Library app Borrowbox. You can't get everything on audiobook or not though the library anyway. Some titles are only available in ebook version. Also I might have to reserve a popular title and it automatically appears when I get to the top of the queue. I've just had 'None Of this is True' by Lisa Jewel become available to me this morning. It originally wasn't due to become available until 2024! So either everyone ploughed throught it very quickly or they didn't like it and returned it early.

PetitPorpoise · 27/07/2023 08:35

I'm trying to replace my phone with a book (she said, typing on her bloody phone 🙄) so I try to always have one to hand.

Another thing that helps me is to have an audiobook on the go when I'm schlepping the kids around and watching them at parks and soft plays. The more I listen, it builds momentum so I want to listen more and sometimes find myself choosing it over TV in the evening as well because it's at a good bit

Riverlee · 28/07/2023 21:35

Read 30-60 minutes at night, most nights. Also, trying to relax at weekends instead of being busy, so trying to sit and read then. Eg, enjoying sitting outside, when it’s been warm and sunny.
