Hi, I've read a lot of coming of age type books recently and I'm finding them a bit unrelatable being in my 40s. Can anyone recommend some great books with protagonists in their 40s ot 50s?
Maybe something with a bit of romance in it but it doesn't have to.
Not chick lit.

How about Grown Ups by Marian Keyes? I've always avoided her books because I thought they'd be too light but hot this one on a kindle desk and it was good.

Marian Keyes books aren’t all chick lit, I read one which was a series of short stories about her life in London, alcoholism, work, all told with a touch of humour but sometimes dark humour.

Doug Johnstones Skelf series is about 3 women in same family, one in 70s running the family firm (funeral directors and private eye), her daughter and adult granddaughter. All strong characters.

More from Marian Keyes - 'Rachel, Again' (tho it helps to have had read 'Rachel's Holiday' first), and 'My Favourite Mistake'.

'Late in the Day' - Tessa Hadley.

'The Exhibitionist' - Charlotte Mendelson.

'Sorrow and Bliss' - Meg Mason (tho a bunch of it is set in when the protagonist is younger)

Three Times Table by Sara Maitland. Mum, DD and gran share a house, and mystical things happen.

Home Truths, same author - middle aged siblings return to the family home following an accident which disabled one of the siblings and caused the death of her partner.

Ruth is 39 in the first Ruth Galloway mystery, IIRC. There are 10+ of them and they are by Elly Griffiths. The Karen Pirie books by Val McDermid also good.
