Am I missing out not reading Terry Pratchet?

My Mum loved Terry Pratchet and I do know that I tried to read one of his books (can’t remember which one) many moons ago, but it just didn’t grab me. Mind you I was a lot younger and impatient back then!

I’m now looking for something to read that I can really get lost in and escape, and wondering if it’s worth tryingTerry Pratchet again? His books seem to be so universally enjoyed and revered.

If so, can anybody recommend a good book to start?

I didn't start reading them until recently. I've read the first 3 of the witches series and very much looking forward to the 4th

The style can be hard to get into but once you've got it they are really gold.

Guards, guards

I've read them all and loved them but they're not for everyone. If you want to start at the very beginning then The Colour of Magic is the one to go for but I would argue it's not the best. Having said that it will give you an introduction to the Discworld.

I'd suggest something like Wyrd Sisters or Mort.

I have an elderly copy of Wyrd Sisters if you want it. Just about to take some of my duplicates to the charity shop.

(I will have bought most of them from charity shop or car boot sale anyway.)

I started as a teen with Mort and was absolutely hooked.

The colour of magic is the first chronologically but not the best to get you into it imo.

Oh wow - Thank you so much everyone!

Off to google the recommendations and get started.

Mort is a great start

I started with Guards, Guards and absolutely loved it. I then read Wyrd Sisters and Small Gods. I thought they were all brilliant - well-observed, wry, sometimes moving and very, very funny. I then read The Colour of Magic and really struggled with it. Had it been the first one I read I wouldn’t bother with the rest so I am glad I decided to jump in elsewhere.

Oh I love Terry Pratchett! I played Magrat in a school production of Wyrd Sisters Grin

The witches series is absolutely brilliant. Very funny and they also have a lot of heart and some important things to say.

Also loved Reaper Man.

Enjoy!

Start with either the city watch or witches sequence would be my recommendation.

UnaOfStormhold · 05/07/2023 14:45

I agree Colour of Magic is not the best place to start - lots to like but it can seem disjointed and directionless and I dismissed him for years having started with it. Small Gods was the book that got me hooked.

Are you missing out? Hard to say but there's so much humour and wisdom in his books and many of them show you things in our world you take for granted from a completely unexpected angle, so I'd say do give them a try.

CatsSnore · 05/07/2023 14:51

The only think I don't massively like, don't shoot me, is there are a few crude innuendos that I don't find funny. I think that's just his SOH though so read past it.

If you like older books like this I would really really recommend David Gemmel. Pick a series, they are all amazing.

This is really handy, definitely don't start with colour of magic, he got a lot lot better!

The first two or three are good to go back to once you're familiar with the world and his style. Weird Sisters is brilliant.
