I don't mind good sci fi either but I'm looking to go to another world for a while with adventure and a bit of romance thrown in.
No medieval type worlds please. I don't really want to go there.
Please recommend me something

The A Court Of Thorns And Roses series is big on BookTok right now, I really enjoyed it.

NoLostCause · 05/07/2023 13:22

Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros
The Schoolmance trilogy by Naomi Novik
Anything by Sarah J Maas - Crescent City series, ACOTAR, TOG
Book of the Ancestor trilogy by Mark Lawrence

FlowerTink · 05/07/2023 13:30

Oh yes to Fourth Wing!

Scarlet Odyssey trilogy by CT Rwizi

Patricia Briggs is urban fantasy - does that work for you? I really enjoy the Mercy Thompson series and there's also the Omega Wolf series (set in the same world).

I recently read a few series' by TA White. The Aileen Travers ones are best - the others are quite fun but have a bit more of a self-published vibe.

I found the first book good, then it turns in to a bit fifty shades

Helen Harper does urban fantasy. I've really enjoyed a lot of her books.
Kelley Armstrong is another urban fantasy author I enjoy. I would automatically buy all of her new books.

I loved the second book and really liked the relationship development between characters, but found it turned to tacky filth.

Lois McMaster Bujold's Penric series is delightful - some serious themes but lots of humour and life. Plus the most determinedly sunny main character I have come across; spending time in his head does me a world of good.

I've also been enjoying The Hands of the Emperor (by Victoria Goddard) and other books from the same world - as a narrative it's flawed in places but a lovely world to spend time in.

The Invisible library series is definitely worth a look too.

This is the first of a trilogy, the second book has just come out so haven’t read it yet but loved this one.

The author also has another trilogy coming out which is set in another different world.

I was absolutely blown away by Gideon the Ninth and the rest of the Locked Tomb books by Tamsyn Muir. I now own all of them in ebook, audio and paper format.

And I've also recently enjoyed The Jasmine Throne by Tasha Suri, and A Taste of Gold and Iron by Alexandra Rowland.

SillyDoriswithaDangler · 05/07/2023 14:22

I’m enjoying the Tairen Soul Series at the moment.

SweetAndSourChick3n · 05/07/2023 14:25

Throne of Glass is a better read than A Court Of Thorns And Roses

Nettle & Bone by T Kingfisher
Witch King by Martha Wells
The Left-Handed Booksellers of London by Garth Nix

What have you already read and enjoyed? I'm gonna assume by medieval it's knights and horses and peasants and swords you're not vibing with? Some of these recs are borderline maybe.

Also probs quite established fantasy series so you may have read them all already!

Mistborn - Brandon Sanderson. Nice magic system, not too medieval but not modern, small romance.
Crescent City - Sarah J Maas. Will be better than TOG or ACOTAR if you're not into medieval vibes, but the info dump in the first part of the book is heavy going, took me a few attempts to get into. The ending was worth it for me. More romance.
Liveship Traders - Robin Hobb. I've heard her other series are good too but not read them yet. Maybe more on the medieval side. Some romance but not dominating.
Strange the Dreamer - Laini Taylor. Loved this duology, unique worldbuilding, nice romance. Maybe leaning towards YA/NA. I also loved her Daughter of Smoke and Bone series though that is definitely more YA.
Six of Crows - Leigh Bardugo. Think this is deffo more YA, but it's a great story. It's a heist with some minimal romance. The sequel is also good.
The Poppy War - R. F Kuang. Asian influenced, wartime, with magic. I only read the first two and can't remember lots of romance.
Empire of the Vampire and/or Nevernight - Jay Kristoff. EOTY more medieval but I was gripped by the way it was told. Nevernight maybe more YA but cool worldbuilding, magic and romance.
The Name of the Wind - Patrick Rothfuss. Unfinished trilogy. Hmm deffo medieval/ye olde worlde vibes. Magic system is cool. The romance was slow burn. Can't remember what happened in book 2.
The Lies of Locke Lamora - Scott Lynch. Loved the first in this series, wasn't able to get into the second. More olde worlde but again I found the storytelling very compelling and enjoyable.

Will leave it there but if you can tell us more about what you've already read I can think some more :)

Liveship Traders is one of my favourite trilogies and isn't medieval, strangely enough it is set in the same world and similar time to the Assaian books which do feel more medieval - but they are well worth reading - and in the correct order to get the full benefits of the world.

I really enjoyed Strange the Dreamer and The Muse of Nightmares too. I found them unusual.

How about Out of the Silent Planet, by C. S. Lewis? It's the first of a trilogy of science fiction novels.

In places, it's beautifully written. In fact, the description of his journey to Mars is one of the most beautiful things I've ever read. Lewis was a superb stylist. He was also staggeringly well read (he could read Ancient Greek, Latin, Italian, you name it) and draws upon a vast range of knowledge to construct his fantasy worlds.

He wrote this around the time his friend Tolkien was writing Lord of the Rings, and they would read their works out to each other in an Oxford pub. God, how I would love to have been there!

The windowing flames trilogy by Jen Williams (I think the first book is called the Ninth Rain). Really enjoyed that. As with pp anything by Robin Hobb.

Thanks so much for all these fab recommendations. Can't wait to get going with one after I've done my research

John Gwynne's The Faithful and Fallen series was excellent. Also second recommendation for Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson.

I think technically they are young adult books, but I love Garth Nix' 'Old Kingdom' series. They would be great to devour back to back on holiday.
