Well-written fantasy for young kids?

Teleporno · 27/06/2023 14:53

DS7 loved The Hobbit last year. He expressed interest in LOTR which I warned would be too grown-up for him . I put the audiobook on and he found it boring. Can anyone recommend any fantasies for his age? He loves the Norse Myths and Kevin Crossley Holland's Arthur: The Always King.
TIA

This might not be “fantasy” enough, but my son like the hobbit and he also likes the ‘Last kids on Earth” books. They are doable for children to read themselves, so not as complicated a story line as things like hobbit.

Land of the stories

BiscuitsandPuffin · 27/06/2023 14:58

Controversial opinion but I really liked Eragon and the rest of the Inheritance series by Christopher Paolini.

BiscuitsandPuffin · 27/06/2023 14:59

Also the Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer. It's not High Fantasy but he might like it as it's quite well-written.

ditalini · 27/06/2023 15:20

The Edge Chronicles - Paul Stewart.
Anything by Diana Wynne Jones.

Harpings · 27/06/2023 15:22

Cogheart series
how to train your dragon
maybe not fantasy but very popular in our house

JaneyGee · 27/06/2023 16:46

The first chapter of LOTRs is really dull and slow. It isn’t until they reach the old forest that it picks up.

How about the Narnia books? They are beautifully written.

Or Philip Pullman’s Dark Materials?

OhBling · 27/06/2023 16:48

The Dragons of Pern - an oldie but a goodie.

pollyhemlock · 27/06/2023 17:08

Try these: Loki- A Bad God’s Guide to Being Good by Louie Stowell; Brightstorm series by Vashti Hardy; Sky Song by Abi Elphinstone; Dragon Mountain and sequels by Katie and Kevin Tsang. Have you tried Harry Potter yet? The Dragons of Pern series recommended above were books I loved as a
teenager, but I seem to remember they have a fair amount of sex in them so I would hold off for now.

Hurrayforfridays · 27/06/2023 22:20

Another recommendation for the Edge Chronicles... 🙂

IcakethereforeIam · 27/06/2023 23:15

Garth Nix I think it's something like Abhorsen? It's a trilogy. The Northern Lights trilogy by wotsisface....Pullman? Robert Westall wrote some cracking books. The Weirdstone of Brisingamen by Alan Garner.

PimpMyFridge · 27/06/2023 23:19

Terry Pratchet disc world.
Lion Boy trilogy by Zezu Courder (sp.?) Not as high level literarily speaking but a good story nonetheless.

PimpMyFridge · 27/06/2023 23:21

Edge chronicles are ok, but they're a quite formulaic if you read more than 2.

ShowsLikeThese · 27/06/2023 23:22

Skulduggery Pleasant series by Derek Landy
How to Train your Dragon series by Cressida Cowell

Garth Nix is a good shout. We.loved Sabriel etc but the Keys to the Kingdom series is also vg.

Ds2 also recently read and enjoyed Guardians of Magic by Chris Riddell.

Theawkwardblonde · 27/06/2023 23:35

The Chrestomanci Books by Dianna WynnJones. I've recently re read as an adult (31) and enjoyed them. Google which order to read them in as it differs to the publication order.

Tormundsbeard · 27/06/2023 23:38

Wereworld books by Curtis Jobling

HonoriaLucastaDelagardie · 27/06/2023 23:46

Some of E. Nesbit - Five Children and It, The Phoenix and the Carpet, The Story of the Amulet.

If he's read The Hobbit, he might find The Faraway Tree and The Wishing Chair a bit young, but they are quite original and imaginative.

Millicentmargaretamandaholden · 27/06/2023 23:47

Harklights is one of my favourite books
Skandar and unicorn thief
Amari and the Knight Brothers

Teleporno · 28/06/2023 10:14

Thanks all. How to Drain Your Dragon- yes I think he'll like that. We've done CS Lewis. Philip Pullman- I read the first one a few years ago, it was so good. I'm wondering if he might be a bit young?
@HonoriaLucastaDelagardie I was planning on starting Five Children and It with him actually but I forgot about it.
I'll check out Diana Wynne Jones too. I read Howl's Moving Castle a while back- that was fab.

Harry Potter- We've read the first together- obviously I've read all of them Grin

@JaneyGee yes it does take a while to build up but I think he'll be better waiting a few years.

One I'd forgotten, The Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander.

merryhouse · 28/06/2023 11:22

Icake - I was coming on to say the Chronicles of Prydain! Possibly a bit much for a seven-year-old? I don't know, my two tended to avoid my recommendations on principle Grin

The Once and Future King by T H White - an Arthur series. First one is very kid-friendly (The Sword in the Stone, became an animated film), there's one of the five that is all a bit weird and has on occasion been left out ;-)

The Dark is Rising series - Over Sea, Under Stone is the first one. I read that in KS3 so maybe leave it a year or two?

Carbonel and sequels by Barbara Sleigh. About a cat (apparently based on a folk tale).

The Ordinary Princess by M M Kaye

The Green Knowe series

How to Train your Dragon

S2 loved Wolf Brother by Michelle Paver

Jijithecat · 28/06/2023 11:29

The Carpet People by Terry Pratchett and also the Bromeliad trilogy - Truckers, Diggers and Wings. Truckers is the best in my opinion so you could just stop there.

Teleporno · 28/06/2023 13:45

@merryhouse I have a few of those on my kindle unread 😳 including The Once and Future King. He's watched Sword In the Stone and loves it so we'll try the books, thanks.
Is the Disney film Black Cauldron based on Prydain? He wasn't scared of the film.

Yes, but very, very loosely. Not a patch on the books imo.
