I know many of you ahve got the book either from Eliza or elsewhere but don't want to post on the other thread about it as it's full of people not yet having read it.

Did everyone else think the baby was going to have died because of drink-driving? or that the 'affair' was real? and the boss (Jeremy from Waymark?) was doing something sinister?

Basically, my point is every time I read a bit of it I expected it to turn out differently to how it did.

Thanks for this, VS, I shall persevere then. I'm not feeling very engaged by it at the moment, but if there are twists it may draw me in....

RipMacWinkle · 23/02/2008 07:23

Yes exactly VS I did.

Then I felt a bit worried that I was too cynical these days and always expect/interpret the worst. But to be fair, I think that's what Eliza wanted us to think.

I cried at this book - I think it was the baby angle.

Did you enjoy it?

VictorianSqualor · 23/02/2008 12:01

I found it quite hard at the beginning too merlotmama, but when I did I didn't want to put it down.

I didn't cry ripmacwinkle, no, but I was teary eyed.

I enjoyed the story and agree with you thought drink driving may be involved, my only criticism ( and it is only a minor one) is that I got increasingly irritated about the setting, we live very close to Tuneham village where it is set and I constatntly went well that's wrong, that's wrong. If I didn't know the place well then no problem and I know I should give some poetic licence but still mildly irritating.

Bridie3 · 23/02/2008 18:08

Does she call it Tyneham in the book? I thought I read she'd changed the name intentionally so people knew it wasn't the real place.

I couldn't put it down. I thought it was beautifully written and I was eager to find out the main characters stories (past and present).
I did blub like a big baby in parts.
I'm looking forward to reading more of Eliza's work.

Have just finished this - what a great book. I agree that you expected things to be 'the worst' and I accepted the initial story of Lew's death so finding out about Johnson's involvement was a surprise too.

Can't wait for more ! Am a bit tired though as stayed up last night to finish it...

merlotmama · 29/02/2008 21:22

Nope, struggled to finish it. Not impressed, I'm afraid. Too many coincidences and on many occasions I was brought up short, thinking 'What!??!
