I may have bought a few too many books-Where should I start with these?

A local charity shop sells 5 books for a £1 and the local library held a sale on the same day. I may have gone a little wild and I don't think I need to buy any more books this year but where do I begin? I'm terrible at picking books so any suggestions on which I should prioritise would be helpful.

TIA

I usually enjoy Anne Tyler, not sure if I've read that particular one. Americanah is a fantastic book, definitely recommend

Put Dear Mrs Bird at the bottom of the pile

I absolutely loved Windswept and Interesting the autobiography by Billy Connolly! I highly recommend it.

I have read Atonement, but find Ian McEwan over rated and a bit up himself, but that may be just me...

I just found a straggler. I also bought Your House Will Pay by Steph Cha.

Too many books?... I don't understand... Grin

'Too many books' is a similar concept to 'left over wine'. Does not compute.

Definitely not you. I have only read Chesil Beach, but it didn't have me rushing to the bookshop to find more of his work. 'A bit up himself' pretty much sums it up.

Thanks all. I really appreciate it. I have a real problem with choosing books so having others narrow them down is very helpful.

Good point about there being no such thing as too many books. I'm tempted to return today but I'll resist the urge for now.

Some are filler books that I bought to get the 5 for £1 deal including Chesil Beach but I'm still looking forward to reading them. I've read Enduring Love and liked it. I suspect that I won't enjoy CB quite as much but it's short so I'll try it.

I have far too many books. I'm a saddo and I put them all in the bookcase in alphabetical order and read them that way 😆

Sign up to Goodreads. It gives tons of book reviews by the subscribers, you can follow people who like similar books to you. People list their favourite books etc.

I also like to check out the plot first, as the book cover generally tells you very little. I don’t mind knowing the plot beforehand, because a good book will still enchant you while you read to the resolution.

Send The Doll Factory back to the charity shop, it's terrible. Gratuitous scenes of animal abuse, bodily functions and a really poor ending.

ThymeAndTide · 15/06/2023 13:01

Anne Tyler is one of my favourite authors (although I haven't read Vinegar Girl) so I'd probably start with that.

Death and the Penguin is highly rated, I believe.

As an aside, I keep reading on here about people getting X number of books for £1 from a charity shop. I wish one of the shops near me would do this. Mine are all £1.99 each.

I'd start with Americanah. It's a brilliant book.

Days Without End by Sebastian Barry is brilliant. There are some graphic scenes of attacks on First Nation villages, yet it's not gratuitously done. And the love story is truly touching.

I also enjoyed The Friendly Ones by Philip Henscher. Interesting portrayal of second generation immigrant families.
