A book where you really get involved with the characters

I feel like reading this kind of book.

However, I'm more interested in hearing about the books you have read where you felt really involved with the characters; where you even missed them when the book (or series maybe) was over.

I'm imagining (and hoping) that there will be a variety.

The Weekend by Charlotte Wood. Brilliant characters, 3 older women getting together after the death of their friend, all of them flawed, and in many ways annoying- very well written. Have also imagined who would play them in the film adaptation.

I can see myself downloading some of these suggestions for my holiday reading.

I always feel like that with Jane Austen and Marian Keyes.

This is the kind of fiction I love too. I've just re-read Any Human Heart by William Boyd and Logan Mountstuart has taken up residence in my head again, so I'd recommend that. Also Kate Atkinson's sequel to Life after Life, called A God in Ruins - a more straightforward narrative than Life after Life, for most of the book anyway and a wonderful main character.

Diana Gabaldon's Outlander Series. Fell in love with them in the 90's and am always excited for the next book (9 at the moment).

Love all the characters and have read them multiple times.

All of Margaret Forster. I'm reading 'Over' and am practically sitting next to the main character.

An absolutely brilliant writer. I miss her.

Under the Whispering Door. It is about death, or rather life after death, and I cried a lot during this read. I'm really not one for crying. The main characters were thought provoking and you do find yourself rooting for them but it was the support characters (is support the right word?) that really captured my heart.

OneFrenchEgg · 02/06/2023 18:37

@Cat1066 yes I'm rediscovering her - next up is The Unknown Bridesmaid

SweetPetrichor · 02/06/2023 18:57

Hazard and Somerset Mysteries by Gregory Ashe. (First book is Pretty Pretty Boys). I adore the characters. I can read those books over and over again.

HopeAndStrength · 02/06/2023 18:59

The Caraval trilogy (young adult fiction but I loved it)

mathanxiety · 02/06/2023 19:01

The Boys in the Boat, by Daniel James Brown, might fit the bill, OP. I really enjoyed it, and I might even read it again this summer.

Just ordered that on a whim @mathanxiety Smile

Redlarge · 04/06/2023 19:48

Elenor oriphant

Pigtailsandall · 04/06/2023 20:52

The Promise by Damon Galgut; it's an amazing story about a South African family over several decades that references major historical events along the family narrative. The characters arent likeable but wonderfully constructed and complex

mysonsmother82 · 04/06/2023 20:55

I'm reading Again Rachel Mariyan Keyes and had forgot how much I'd loved the Walsh family.

FannythePinkFlamingo · 04/06/2023 21:31

Any Human Heart by William Boyd is a book that has stayed with me.
