We have just discovered a free audiobook service from our library, so I would like to cancel my audible subscription, however I have 5 credits which I need to use and am having decision paralysis over what to get.

books I have read and loved in the past include the time travellers wife, the girl with the pearl earring, a thousand splendid suns, the kite runner, Anils ghost, the lady and the unicorn…..

please hit me with your recommendations!

I'm listening to "All the light we cannot see" at the moment and it is excellent. Really brilliant narration and story.

I stopped my audible to use library borrowbox, then discovered nothing I wanted was available for ages. Just in case you haven't checked out what they have yet.
I enjoyed The Final Confessions of Mabel Stark, The Sea The Sea (partly due to Richard E Grant's narration because the story was rather ludicrous) and Mrs Benson's Beetle, which I wouldn't have bothered reading but enjoyed listening to. It's got a sort of Sunday Night Drama feel.

I loved Fire Rush by Jacqueline Crooks, particularly good if you like music, she's a dub MC.

I use Audible for my bedtime story, I drop off after 5 minutes so takes me months to get through a book! I really like anything by Lisa Jewell or Claire Douglas, currently listening the The Couple at No 9.

Cat, I also have 'All the Light We Cannot See' on Audible and it is gorgeous!

OP, I have the following favourites, which are incredibly good value for money:

A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth (about 60 hours!)

The Wolf Hall trilogy by Hilary Mantel (available as a single download, 30ish hours)

The Maddaddam trilogy by Margaret Atwood (about 50 h in total?), consisting of

  1. Oryx and Crake
  2. The Year of the Flood
  3. Maddaddam
which are purchased as separate downloads, but worth every penny, a totally immersive experience.

What I would absolutely love to find on Audible is more recordings of the work of Doris Lessing; currently I think there's only The Golden Notebook available.

I've recommended this to loads of people but Project Hail Mary is superb. Sci Fi that's both funny, gripping and life affirming.

I find a good reader can make me overlook a bad book. And vice versa. Find a reader you like and stick with them! (And as a freebie I'll let you in to the fact that Samuel West reads everything superbly.)

I love Stephen Fry reading Heroes and Mythos. The Marriage Portrait by Maggie O’Farrell is also really good.

Everything Stephen Fry especially the biography

Currently working my way through David Sedaris collection of books which are at times v funny and sometimes poignant but always so brilliantly written.. not for those who clutch pearls at the sound of a swear word or two though !

Demon Copperhead works really well on Audible.

Audible allows you to pause your membership, so you don't pay anything for three months but can still use the five credits that you already have at any point over this time. I pause mine at least once every year! It would give you time to spend your credits on books you really want without rushing to decide, and you can always still go ahead and cancel after the three months.

Agree a good narrator makes all the difference. Almost without exception, the Audible versions of Stephen King novels are brilliantly narrated. They aren't all horror, either - check out 11.22.63 or The Institute. They aren't exactly warm and fluffy but they are definitely not ghouls and gore.

It's a bit out there in terms of style, but Ducks, Newburyport worked so well as an audiobook, and it's long long long. I got wrapped up in it over a period of weeks and just loved every minute of it.
