Ive just finished "kevin" and it actually kept me awake all night, it was the scene towards the end...I'm sure those of you that have read it will know which part I mean.

Its the first time a book has disturbed me.

Anyway I've only recenly started reading fiction books so I would like recommendations on what to go for next...maybe something like Kevin but by a different author (I found the book a bit hard to read

Any recommendations appreciated.

Jodi Picoult's books are a fairly easy read.

evelynrose · 18/02/2008 21:53

Well, the most similar book to Kevin that I've read is "The Fifth Child" by Doris Lessing. Quite short and easy to read, again a sort of "you can't predict what sort of child you'll have" type of plot but less horrific.

In the Woods by Tana French.

crapmomonMN · 18/02/2008 22:02

Not read "Kevin" but this is the second thread I have seen about it - am going to order it now from Amazon. Agree with PM - Jodi Piccoult is good (sometimes) If you havent read any of hers try "My sisters Keeper".

ambercat · 18/02/2008 22:24

Fingersmith by Sarah Waters, Fantastic book, not really like "Kevin" though!

BearMama · 21/02/2008 22:20

Have you read "The Secret History" by Donna Tartt? Its five star FANTASTIC and a great thriller.

I also really enjoyed "The Time Travellers Wife" by Audrey Niffenegger. Really tender and involving, tho moving, not disturbing!

bigshopper · 21/02/2008 22:25

Philip Pullman (The Golden Compass) is great if you're new to fiction. Fun to read and not heavy going as it's sort of children's literature. Like Harry Potter.

A Thousand Splendid Suns and The Bookseller of Kabul are both really good too. I think they're easier to read than some "serious" novels as they're about women, so more involving.

Really liked fingersmith by Sarah Waters, and another one by her that the name escapes me.

The curious incident of the dog in the garden, but i cant remember was pretty fantastic, i read it in two days, mind you i was away "working" for that one.

Really great book but totally not of this ilk, is the Historian by Kristina Kostova (i might have that wrong too . That is my favourite recent read, was beautifully written and i was quite upset to finish it.

Just read Dracula, well written but disappointing ending.

NOw, the Donna tarrt thing, ive tried to read this twice, i just don't get it - im missing something i think.

Like the time travellers wife.

Trouble is with me, i often forget what the bloody books are about as soon as i have read them lately.

madamekoto · 22/02/2008 09:43

Really recommend any books by Joanne Harris. She wrote Chocolat. Massive thumbs up for time travellers wife, amazing book. Also Beyond Black by Hilary Mantel was fabulous.

Blueskythinker · 22/02/2008 09:48

LEM, I agree, loved time travellers wife, cannot get Donna Tarrt at all. Light and very funny is the Ivy Chronicles (can't remember author) - loved it!

piratecat · 22/02/2008 09:50

'Keeping Faith' by Jodie Picoult was the first I read of hers, and sticks in my mind as the best.

VanillaPumpkin · 22/02/2008 09:53

Donna Tarrt's Secret History is good.
Phillip Pullman's first is called Northern Lights (the film is The Golden Compass) and the trilogy is called His Dark Materials. Recommend!
I am just starting The Kite Runner which looks good.
The Curious incident of the Dog in the nighttime ??? Is v good too and also a teen target book (though it doesn't feel it). You will enjoy that one I am sure...
I wish I had more time to read...
