I love a good murder mystery but I can’t cope with nasty details. I’ve really enjoyed Magpie Murders, that’s just perfect. Which books or authors are your favourite non-gory whodunits?

You can't beat Agatha Christie IMO!

Ichosetheredpill · 26/04/2023 10:57

@HowManySunflowers i haven’t read Agatha Christie for ages, the last time was when we were on holiday in Dartmouth and had visited her house. Will have to get them out again.

Loving Patricia Fisher books by Steve Higgs at the moment. Cozy mysteries, and lots of them to read.

DontMakeMeShushYou · 26/04/2023 22:30

Agatha Christie
Carola Dunn (Daisy Dalrymple mysteries)
Frances Evesham (Exham-on-Sea mysteries)
Julie Wassmer
Stephanie Austin (Devon mysteries)
M C Beaton (Hamish Macbeth series)

I love a cosy murder mystery!

deeplybaffled · 26/04/2023 22:38

Ngaio Marsh is excellent too - I love Artists in Crime and Singing in the Shrouds.
Carola Dunn- I like Daisy Dalrymple but prefer Eleanor Trewynn.
and Anne Perry - I adore both the Thomas Pitt and the William Monks books, although they are Victorian crime novels rather than 20th century cozies.

If you don't mind historical murder mysteries
Dandy Gilver set in 1920s and 1930s by Catriona McPherson .First one is called After the Armistice Ball
Kate Shackleton set in 1920s Yorkshire by Frances Brody. First one is called Dying in the Wool
Matthew Bartholomew set in 14th century Cambridge by Susanna Gregory . First one is called A Plague on Both Your Houses
Malabar House series set in India post partition India by Vaseem Khan

A trilogy of mysteries starring the late queen as a Miss Marple style figure by S J Bennett

howdoesatoastermaketoast · 26/04/2023 22:46

I recently read the Strike books by Robert Gilbraith (JK Rowlings)

I really loved Troubled Blood

deeplybaffled · 26/04/2023 22:49

Ooh, yes - definitely second the Dandy Gilver series.

and the other Susanna Gregory series about Thomas Challinor is good too, although set in restoration London and has a degree of political intrigue alongside the murders so perhaps isn’t a “cozy.”

Ichosetheredpill · 27/04/2023 21:03

Cosy murder mystery! That’s exactly what I mean! Thanks all.

I have really enjoyed the Death in Paradise first book - A meditation on murder

Struckbylightning · 27/04/2023 21:17

Louise Penny’s books are my current favourite. The detective is called Armand Gamache and they are set in Quebec. Wonderful books!

prettygirlincrimsonrose · 27/04/2023 21:23

There are 3 by James Anderson that I liked - first one is The Affair of the Bloodstained Egg Cosy

PizzaNinja · 27/04/2023 21:48

Have a look at the British Library Crime Classics, there’s quite a few of them.

queenofthebongo · 27/04/2023 21:55

I read Pat Mcintosh's series of books with Gil Cunningham. Set in the 1400's - I really enjoyed them. A bit different too!

muddlingthrou · 27/04/2023 21:59

Jumping on this thread to steal these suggestions! I used to save cosy murder mysteries for winter, but lately I just read them all year round. A teething baby means I'm super sleep-deprived right now and can't think of a single name, but I'll come back!

Ichosetheredpill · 27/04/2023 22:15

@muddlingthrou teething baby here too! I’m indulging in audio books with earbuds when I get a minute to myself, it’s my reward!

I am working my way through all the poirots, via the Libby library app.

Did enjoy the follow on ones written by Sophie someone.

Anthony Horowitz writes sone very twisty murders, with him as a character!

Ichosetheredpill · 27/04/2023 23:33

@burnoutbabe it was Anthony Horowitz’s Magpie Murders that got me back into murder mysteries. So twisty! Have reserved a couple on audiobook at the library and can’t wait to dive in.

Sophie Hannah writes her version of Hercule Poirot . There's also a new book of short stories with Miss Marple as the detective. Each one is written by a different contemporary female writer. It's called Marple : Twelve New Stories.

That has reminded me of Boris Akunin. I really enjoyed Murder on the Leviathan which had several plot twists. I need to read the rest of the series in order as I am that anal but I have several other series on the go so I can't start another one yet.

tobee · 28/04/2023 21:25

Dorothy L Sayers! Especially Have His Carcase.

tobee · 28/04/2023 21:26

Although there is quite a lot of blood in that one.
