Audible recommendations (probably non-fiction)

Any good recent recommendations? I don't get on with fiction on audio unless it's a book I've already read, so really looking for ideas for good non-fiction. I like a mix of stuff - perhaps books that are a bit quirky and interesting about people's lives - and particularly if the narration is good.

Things I've enjoyed recently include The Wilderness Cure (woman living off wild food only for a year), The Islander (autobiography by the founder of Island Records - fabulously read by Bill Nighy), Janesville (about a factory town in the US where the main employer closed down), Land of a Thousand Hills (about Rwanda) & A Libertarian Walks into a Bear (about a group of libertarians who took over a small US town & tried to run it as a government free 'paradise')

I listened to Empire of Pain recently on audible and thought it was brilliant.

What about Wild by Cheryl Strayed?

Sadik · 23/04/2023 15:40

Empire of Pain exactly the sort of thing, but sadly I've read it already on paper. I'll have a look at Wild again - I did look before but wasn't sure about it.

I quite enjoyed the short memoir Dear Reader: The Comfort and Joy of Books written and narrated by Cathy Rentzenbrink. It's not particularly in the same vein as the ones you've mentioned, but it tickled the bookworm in me.

I listen to much more non-fiction than fiction- I agree with you.

I think you’d like Wintering by Katherine May, and she’s got a new one out, Enchantment (I think?)

I’m currently listening to Life In Five Senses by Gretchen Rubin, and just finished The Premonitions Bureau by Sam Knight. I’ve got English Pastoral by James Rebanks in my library too, and Educated by Tara Westover. You’ve probably already read/listened to Humankind?

I too prefer non fiction on Audible. My favourites since subscribing last year:

Bad Blood by John Carreyrou
Fingers Crossed by Miki Berenyi
Good Pop Bad Pop by Jarvis Cocker
Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain
Fall by John Preston
Faith Hope and Carnage by Nick Cave

Hey Sadik

Team Of Rivals was a very good audio

Churchill by Andrew Roberts was excellent

I would also say A Woman Of No Importance

OutDamnedSpot · 25/04/2023 23:16

Jenny Tough - Solo
She narrates it herself which I think adds to the interest.

Bob Mortimer's autobiography, "And Away". Loved it!
Funny, heartwarming, and sad in parts.
He narrates it himself.

Hi Sadik,
My recent audibles faves have been:

Me - Elton John
Pies and prejudice – Stuart Maconie
How to build a girl – Caitlin Moran
Toast – Nigel Slater
Hungry – Grace Dent
Diary of a bookseller – Shaun Bythell
Half-baked idea – Olivia Potts
Taste – Stanley Tucci
The Pants of Perspective – Anna McNuff
How to be famous – Caitlin Moran

Which, now I look at it like this, are 50% food-based 😂

I'm just listening to Countered Terrorism. It's a 6-part podcast. Only 6 hours total but it's on the plus catalogue, so free.

helpfulperson · 26/04/2023 20:40

I love the Michael Palin books and also A history of the world in 100 objects.

Sadik · 26/04/2023 21:07

Oh good thought - podcast recommendations also welcome. I have a spotify sub as well as audible so can get most through that too.

Kate humble is great on audible, I've read all of her books and they are also good on audible

knottsberryfarm · 27/04/2023 19:37

If you liked Empire of Pain there is another book by the same author that was excellent-Say Nothing . It's about the IRA and the disappearance of Jean McConville.

Bad Blood is also v good.
