I don't have a lot of room for books so I'd like a few goodens I can reread. What are yours?

The Blue Flower by Penelope Fitzgerald
Room With A View by EM Forster
And many, many Heyer books.

There are a few fantasy writers who are regular rereads for me too - Helen Harper's Blood Destiny series, and The Emperor's Edge series by Lindsay Buroker are just two of these.

For reasons I can’t fully explain I must have read “The Razor’s Edge” by Somerset Maugham five or six times.

It’s simultaneously genteel and lurid, and most of the characters are fairly unlikeable. It’s also a fascinating window into a not-very-popular period of history.

Oh I agree, and I like you very much. Funnily, anyone who likes his writing, and thus book in particular, has a special place in my heart.

jane Austen, on the other hand. Can’t stand. Not read her since A level, when I used to have to force myself to read the set text (pride and prejudice), or was it persuasion. Possibly both. Dreadful.

is there a sort of Venn diagram of Maugham v Austen, where the circles don’t cross, or do you like JA, @Palmfrond

i could also (and have) read Rebecca many times, @Pieceofpurplesky

i guess I like clean, almost journalistic, writing. Not ribbony whittery endlessly convoluted sentences. For this reason, I like dickens too.

And I probably read a new factual book every couple of days. There are factual books I return too, but they tend to be psychology-type books.

I am a big reader but rarely read something more than once. I am always intrigued by the idea of taking comfort in re-reading a book as it just doesn't occur to me to do that. I think I am going to pepper my reading with revisiting books I've loved. So on that basis, I am going to start by re-reading Beloved by Toni Morrison.

SlightlyJaded · 13/03/2023 22:08

And next will be House of Spirits by Isabelle Alende :)

Neville Shute - the trustee from the tool room OR a town like Alice

I love both of these books. So glad someone else does!! Nevil Shute is a forgotten treasure imo

You can't get library ebooks (Borrowbox I think) to load onto a kindle, can you? I would love to be able to do that.

Eeiliethya · 13/03/2023 22:19

Pet Semetary by Stephen King is my favourite but I could re-read all of his many times and have.

No book, no book whatsoever for a long time

I’m following this thread to find some books. I used to read constantly, never without a book, however I can’t remember the last book I read. I miss reading

tiredvommachineasaurus · 13/03/2023 22:19

Little Women and Tom's Midnight Garden.

MidgeHardcastle · 13/03/2023 22:20

Ooh I'd forgotten about Bill Bryson. My favourite re-read is The Lost Continent

Orcubed · 13/03/2023 18:28

Everyone else on this thread has far more high brow taste in books 😆

I know right? I’m not even saying mine! 😂

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 13/03/2023 22:23

Rebecca
A Christmas Carol (only at Christmas though!)
The William books
But I get a new book from the library once or twice a month. Sometimes I'll fancy reading something and they'll get it in for me for £1 if they haven't got it. I recommend you do that. There weren't any novels in my house growing up - thank goodness for the library!

kirkandpetal · 13/03/2023 22:23

Judge me all you like....Jilly Cooper.

Riders, Rivals, Polo especially.

Weatherwax13 · 13/03/2023 22:25

A Room With A View, E M Forster.
Haven't read it for years now but did several times when I was younger. Still my favourite novel.
I don't have much space nowadays either. I buy books second hand and pass them onto my daughter. If you have another reader in your life it's a good system.

Mumoftwoboysaged4and5 · 13/03/2023 22:29

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley is a great book to go back to. I always appreciate it more with each read.

I’m shocked at how many Hardy fans are on here. His books are all so depressing.

For pure joyous comfort it’s definitely all the Harry Potter books

FineThings · 13/03/2023 22:32

Books I have reread again and again and again and again:
The Secret History
Most of the Peter Wimsey books especially Gaudy Night
Good Omens
Hitchhikers Guide
Terry Pratchett especially Guards Guards and Sourcery
The Lord of the Rings
The Illustrated Man
Georgette Heyer especially Bath Tangle
Loads of children’s books including The Dark is Rising, Children of Green Knowe, Anne of Green Gables, Little Women, The Enchanted Castle, The Secret Garden….

Some of the books I’ve read more than four or five times
Pride and Prejudice
Wuthering Heights
Morvern Callar
Wise Children
Girlfriend in a Coma
Various Jeeves and Woosters

Have you seen the Room with a View movie? I mean the Helena Bonham Carter one? God, it’s SO good.

William Goldings "Lord of the Flies"

I have 3 copies and Spark Notes dotted about .
I can pick it up , open at any page and see something new , even though I've read it more times than I care to remember

It's a heartbreaking tale

Yes, it’s brilliant!
