Hi everyone,

Just finished reading Shuggie Bain and it’s left me feeling a bit down. Would be grateful for your light hearted reading recommendations to lift my spirits!

Right Ho Jeeves by P G Wodehouse. Read it out loud. It’s as close to
perfection as a work of art can be. Wodehouse is pure joy (and a master of the English language).

Dickens always cheers me up. Even the sad bits are somehow uplifting. Whenever I finish a Dickens novel, I feel better about the human race.

Patrick Leigh Fermor’s travel books are incredibly joyful. He is interested in everyone and everything, and he always sees the best in people. Like Dickens, he was a naturally upbeat, high-energy person, and you feel it in his work.

Other books that always give me a lift: Kipling’s Kim, Bill Bryson’s Notes from a Small Island, Pride and Prejudice, Evelyn Waugh’s Decline and Fall, the Sherlock Holmes books, The Wind in the Willows, A Hitchhiker ’s Guide, Brian Blessed’s autobiography and Lewis’ Narnia books.

I was really down and having a bit of a nightmare time a couple of months ago and I picked up The Stranger Times by C.K McDonnell.
I was a bit hesitant because it's not my normal kind of book but it was exactly what I needed to cheer me up.
The characters are brilliant and it actually made me lol. I have listened to all of them on audible which I think is better because the narrator is brilliant.
They are a little bit of silliness and really put me in a good mood.

Second Bridget Jones as the ultimate comfort read.
Cold Comfort Farm made me laugh out loud.
The Adrian Mole books.

I'm reading Circe by Madeline Miller. It's absolute fluff, but it's clipping along and I'm having a lovely time. I quite like Greek mythology anyway, and this is enjoyable nonsense.
I chose something brainless because I just finished something brilliant but rather hardgoing.

Diary of a Nobody always cheers me up.
