I loved all of the below, I suppose a general theme is books centred around family/multiple generations. Looking for recommendations please of some other good quality, thought-provoking reads which have a similar feel to them.

Khaled Hosseini - The Kite Runner, A Thousand Splendid Suns, And the Mountains Echoed

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie - Americanah, Purple Hibiscus, Half of a Yellow Sun

Min Jin Lee - Pachinko, Free Food for Millionaires

Chris Cleave - The Other Hand

Jonathan Safran Foer - Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close

Zadie Smith - White Teeth (didn’t enjoy her other books as much though)

Lisa See - The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane

I read and enjoyed most of those also. My favourite book of all time though is The Dust Diaries by Owen Sheer.

Victoria Hislop?

Also try Sea of Poppies by Amitav Ghosh. I still need to get the other two books.

Loads of great suggestions to look up here - thanks all! I’ve loved The Hearts Invisible Furies and the Beekeeper of Aleppo too!

Came on to give these exact recommendations (particularly The Poisonwood Bible). Haven't read Hamnet, so a recommendation for me too there!

A Suitable Boy.

I came on to say this. The ne plus ultra of the sprawling family saga, and set in a fascinating if sometimes horrifying time.

Also, quite different but about the effects of actions across and down the generations: Commonwealth by Ann Patchett.
