I'm hoping just to dedicate some time to getting back into reading...
Have a young child so it's not always possible!!

I think I've been trying to read Rosie Project for three years now !!

Looking for recommendations for your best book, book you couldn't put down to try and start something new that will keep me interested....

I like crime and thrillers, could not put down "The push" and "Dear child", loved Harry Hole series by Jo Nesbo. Enjoyed "Before we were yours", recently "Stolen marriage". I really love reading medical diaries, absolutely loved "Call the midwife" series, Adam Kay "This is going to hurt" as well as his remaining books. "The war doctor", "Unnatural causes", "When breath becomes air" were all brilliant medical memoirs. I loved Noel Fitzpatrick's books too. "Factfullness" is very interesting non fiction book x

After You'd Gone by Maggie O'Farrell.
All That Remains by Sue Black.
Mother Mother by Annie Mac.

I also have young kids and struggle to read much these days. I do it in fits and bursts though. I absolutely loved The Dutch House by Ann Patchett, I read it about a year ago and haven’t read anything I loved as much since (although have only read a couple since then 😳).

I have heard a lot of people saying they couldn’t put ‘Lessons in Chemistry’ down, but I haven’t read it myself yet.

Binfire · 23/01/2023 20:50

I’ve just absolutely raced through Sorrow and bliss too, I was so sad when I finished it and haven’t felt like that about a book for years.

Scootergrrrl · 23/01/2023 20:50

The Last Thing To Burn by Will Dean or Last One At The Party by Bethany Clift. I could not put either one down!

ElfineHawkMonitor · 23/01/2023 21:12

Do you know Persephone Books? If not head to their website, you’re in for a treat. I would start with some Dorothy Whipple: persephonebooks.co.uk/pages/dorothy-whipple

I couldn’t put down The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah, it really grabbed me and had me welling up in places. I read it again a few months ago and it did the same.

I also loved The Heart’s invisible furies by John Boyne, couldn’t put that down.

The Curious Incident of the dog in the Night time was good too as suggested up thread, Spot of Bother was good too.

Hearts Invisible Furies - John Boyne
All The Light We Cannot See - Anthony Doerr
Still Life - Sarah Winman

I got Sorrow and Bliss for Christmas, so looking forward to it now!
Would agree on Lucinda Riley and Elizabeth Jane Howard.
Read The Children's Book by A.S Byatt recently, as I like that historical period....it was gripping but dark....
I find Alexander McCall Smith a happy and easy read.

The Nothing Girl by Jodi Taylor.
I'm rereading it, it's like comfort food!

Flumptastic · 23/01/2023 21:51

Last One at the Party is good but if you want something funny what about something by Katherine Heiny, both Standard Deviation and Early Morning Riser are fab
i was also completely gripped by the Marriage Portrait by Maggie O’Farrell

QueenAstrid · 23/01/2023 21:55

Anything by Kate Atkinson, especially Behind the Scenes at the Museum

BaconAndAvocado · 23/01/2023 22:04

Currently reading Lessons in Chemistry. Loving it and don’t want it to end!

SlumMumBum · 23/01/2023 22:06

If you like family drama - I'm Sorry You Feel That Way by Rebecca Wait. I loved it.

The Couple at Number 9.

Yes! I loved this when we read it for book club and read it in 3 days (and I have a toddler 🤣). I then read The Girls Who Disappeared and have just started The Sisters. Am loving the Claire Douglas books!

flabbygoldfish · 23/01/2023 22:27

The Book Thief - Markus Zusak
Misery Stephen King

EthelMcUnready · 23/01/2023 22:34

Girl, Woman, Other ~ Bernadine Evaristo
The Humans ~ Matt Haig
Eleanor Oliphant....
The Secret Keeper ~ Kate Morton
Hamnet ~ Maggie O'Farrell

None of these are particularly hard reads but all were books that stayed with me a d made me want to discuss with people!

Caterguin · 23/01/2023 22:38

I remember needing easy reads when mine were babies.

Erin Kelly books were easily held in one hand whilst bf!
Rachel Joyce
Rivers of London books
Short story collections worked quite well for me too. I had just enough attention span.

IseeBrigadoon · 23/01/2023 22:46

Anything by Rose Tremain but especially Gustavs Sonata! It’s just something about the way she tells a story- just so lovely!

Morvern Callar by Alan Warner. If you’ve seen the film- as always the book is a million times better!

The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt

Milkman by Anna Burns

oh I could go on forever……

BaconAndAvocado · 24/01/2023 17:24

IseeBrigadoon I also loved Gustav’s Sonata. RT is one of my favourite authors although I haven’t got round to reading her latest yet.
Music and Silence is in my all time top 20 favourite books.
