I'm desperate to get engrossed in a book again.

Very little seems to interest me right now.

I love dystopian novels.

Over the years, I've loved:

Handmaids Tale
Flawed
The Road
World War Z
Brave New World

Found these ok:

Vox
Station Eleven
The Chrysalids
1984
I am legend

And loads more I can't remember!

Have you read anything along these lines that you would recommend?

I've just finished The School for Good Mothers by Jessamine Chan. Have a cup of tea & some good biscuits by your side though, I cried continuously through the last 15 pages!

Also seconding Never Let Me Go and Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro.

The Stepford Wives

The three body problem by Cixin Liu - more sci but a strong flavour of dystopia.

kilos · 09/01/2023 21:24

Already been mentioned but
Moths
The End of Men
The Long Walk

I enjoyed them all

OrionsAccessory · 09/01/2023 21:24

A boy and his dog at the end of the world by Charlie Fletcher

Vox by Christina Valcher

The Power by Naiomi Alderman

Sand by Hugh Howey is good too (but not as good as the wool trilogy)

Vwswimmer1 · 09/01/2023 21:24

I really enjoyed power by Naomi Alderman and also the Wool series by Hugh Howey

MotherofPearl · 09/01/2023 21:24

What about some Ursula Le Guin, OP?

CantFindTheBeat · 09/01/2023 21:25

Thanks so much, everyone.

What amazing recommendations,

Just ordered a few on Amazon, including a The Miracle Inspector which I first read years ago and want to re-read and highly recommend.

I'll report back - thanks again 💕

The wall
The ship
Gather the daughters

Spudlet · 09/01/2023 21:26

A YA one - Only Ever Yours.

An adult one - The Girl With All The Gifts.

The wall
The ship
Gather the daughters

I've just given up on The Wall, @Theredjellybean

Not sure if it was the book or my lack of concentration.

I’d second swan song. Currently £173 on Amazon but free on unlimited. Shame - my youngest thought we’d make a mint as I seem to have acquired multiple copies.

girl with all the gifts + its sequel boy on the bridge.

LaurelGrove · 09/01/2023 21:29

The Death of Grass is the bleakest dystopian novel I've ever read. I think it is even more depressing than The Road and that is saying something - stuff goes wrong then falls apart in no time at all. It's a terrifying idea with a follow up of humans at their very worst. It's utterly brilliant but make sure you're feeling robust.

stringbean · 09/01/2023 21:30

I'd recommend The Mandibles by Lionel Shriver. Looks at a potential near future following almost complete economic collapse - interesting reading in light of what we're living through currently.

LaurelGrove · 09/01/2023 21:31

Oh yes. Swan Song is another good one.

The Stand by Stephen King
Earth Abides (can't remember the author!)
The Hunger Games series

One just finished the TV series of The Stand. That was some weird 😲😲😲!!

Those multiple replies were jolly disturbing!

Anyway, I second "Who Have Never Known Men" by Jacqueline Harpman.

Tratjymp · 09/01/2023 21:35

Lord of the Flies.

StarDog · 09/01/2023 21:38

Murakami 1Q84 books ... everyone will debate whether it qualifies in this category and they aren't for everyone. Regardless, they will give your brain a new years work out!

warmmfeet · 09/01/2023 21:39

I'm reading the school for good mothers by jessamaine chan, it's kind of like a cross between 1984 and handmaids tale so far. It's quite gripping.

Heffapotamus · 09/01/2023 21:41

MR Carey - The Girl with all the Gifts and The Boy on the Bridge.

John Wyndham - I've read them all since October - so prescient. My favourite was The Chrysalids.

Your local library should have all of the above.

Definitely Girl with all the gifts! Can’t believe no one else suggested it.
God of Strange New Things is wonderful.

Have you read anything by octavia butler? If not then I recommend parable of the sower, or anything else she has written, it is all brilliant.

I read the death of grass, it's a great (terrifying) concept, but I didn't love the story, the attitudes are very much 'of its time'.

I second cixin liu, the maddaddam trilogy and lots of others mentioned.
