Light-hearted Audible recommendations please

I'm currently back in hospital and feeling very sorry for myself after only being home for two weeks after a two and a half week stay in hospital to have a brain tumour removed. I'm back in hospital with complications and feeling very down about it.

I have a credit to use on my audible subscription and would love recommendations for a book I can download with that credit please.

I'm looking for something light hearted and easy listening as I'm quite poorly with limited stamina. Nothing hard to follow or too serious, I guess! Nothing scary or psychological either. Also not featuring Christmas (as I'm too sad about missing it) or particularly focused on children or families (as I'm even sadder about being away from my two young children).

Thanks so much. Also up for podcast recommendations along the same lines!

I don't have a recommendation but I just wanted to wish you well. Sending love and healing vibes x

I really enjoy Jeeves & Wooster, read by Stephen Fry.
It’s jolly, easy listening, gentle, relaxing, nothing bad happens. I listen to it when I’m going to sleep at night.

Have you already read "The Tent, The Bucket and Me"? If not that is worth a listen.

Also if you have a library card you can listen to an endless number of audiobooks for free - I always come back to PG Wodehouse and Jerome K Jerome in times of stress. You can borrow on Libby and on Borrowbox and always keep a few on loan for those 4am moments.

"Why mummy drinks" series by Gill Sims is very funny.

Thank you all for recommendations so far - I haven't read any of them! I will investigate. And thank you @walkersareback for the good wishes.

Agatha Christie is my go-to comfort listen. The ones read by Hugh Fraser are particularly soothing, but they're all good.

JassyRadlett · 18/12/2022 21:22

And all the very best for a quick recovery - absolutely gutting to be back in so soon, hopefully this is just a blip x

I'll have a think and come back, but in the meantime, sending very best wishes and may you have a speedy recovery. Stay strong 💐

My mum really enjoyed
“King Street Junior” when she had a long spell in hospital recently. I think she said she got 36 hours worth with one credit.
Its a drama/ light comedy set in a junior school in the 1970s/80s. My mum was a head teacher though before she retired.
She just bought the second series imaginatively titled- “King Street Junior Revisited ” she advises that this isn’t as entertaining.
I do hope you find something that You enjoy.
Best wishes

I have recently enjoyed 'Remarkably Bright Creatures' which is a quirky but engaging story, partly narrated by an octopus. I hope you enjoy it x

MmedeGouge · 18/12/2022 21:40

Ps
So sorry I didn’t read to the end- I read the first bit and called out to my mum who was passing through to the kitchen what was the series that she kept banging on about when she was in hospital!
Then I returned to your post. So scrap King Street Junior. My mum also recommends the Jane Austin BBC Drama Collection.
We wish you a speedy recovery.

I'm really sorry to read this OP. I hope you make it home soon.

Agree with Agatha Christie recommendation.

Do you like dogs? I really enjoyed listening to Andrew Cotter's 'Olive, Mabel and Me'. He has a lovely voice and the whole thing was extremely gentle.

ZerotoSixtySnail · 18/12/2022 22:13

So sorry you’re having a rotten time.

Major Pettogrews last stand by Helen Simonson is just lovely. Beautifully written, absorbing and light hearted.

Purpleavocado · 18/12/2022 22:20

The Chronicles of St Mary's are good light hearted time travel. The first is Just One Damned Thing After Another by Jodi Taylor.
Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Philandbill · 18/12/2022 22:24

Maeve Binchey's "Scarlett Feather" is a lovely easy listen. Wishing you well OP.

Can second The Tent, the Bucket and Me. Great fun read. I also enjoyed The Midnight Library as an easy read.
