I bought my Mum the latest Thursday murder club and was feeling quite smug....until I found Dad bought it too. So now. Looking for an alternative. She reads some saga's I remember some ken follet. Used to read the Jack Reacher books. Quite likes a spy drama. I've bought Nora Roberts before. Any suggestions? Thank you.

There's quite a few murder club style books out there. How about the paperback edition of Death and Croissants with a bottle of French wine or French cheeses?

If she likes spy dramas she is sure to enjoy Restless by William Boyd. Intriguing twisting plot, likeable characters, wide scope of scenes and descriptions.
Sweet Caress, also by William Boyd, also has elements of spy drama, then broadens out into other themes, though still very readable and enjoyable.

I love the Shardlake series by CJ Samson. I also recently discovers Laura Shepherd-Robinson.

The both write historical murder mystery/detective novels. Shardlake is set in Tudor England and Laura SR has one about the slave trade in the uk and another about prostitution.

If you like to learn a bit of history they are fascinating. Did you know that 300 years ago pineapples were so expensive, that people having dinner parties would have fake pineapples on the tables so guests would think they were wealthier than they thought.

I love that stuff. Shows that we’re no different than people centuries ago, it’s how we fake flaunt is all that differs.

What about the next book in the Richard Osman series?
Alternatively I read The Marlow Mystery Club by Robert Thorogood and found it quite similar to the Thursday Murder Club.

I really like Frank Gardners books. Well written spy thrillers. I’m in a minority but struggled with Thursday murders. Also consider Robert Galbraith Strike books.

+1 for strike
In the Woods by Tana French

Thanks for the excellent suggestions. I'll take a look at them and get something ordered. There a a few here I might add to my own Christmas list. 🎅

My mum likes Thursday murder club books and also Anthony Horowitz' detective books - Magpie Murders is the 1st book in one series and also his Daniel Hawthorn series. The Word is Murder is i think the 1st one.
I've read AHs and also like them.

I really liked the appeal by Janice Hallett. She has a new one out as well.

WeirdPookah · 13/12/2022 20:21

What about the new collection of Miss Marple stories?
