I've been doing a lot of miles for work lately. 45/50 mins each way. The radio isn't cutting it and is like to make better use of the dead time really.

Do you have any recommendations for me? I'm up for any genre apart from horror and anything sci-fi but I don't mind supernatural.

Thank you Smile

What about Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver? The audiobook is long but the narrator uses quite distinctive voices.

I just listened to ‘stone blind’ by a Natalie Haynes and it is brilliant. She reads it so well

Blake crouch. His dark matter and Recursion are amazing.

I have lots of historical novel recommendations if you like? The Last Kingdom series, tons of georgette heyer new penguin book recordings, all the Outlander books, Elizabeth Gaskell Cranford, various unabridged Jane Austens. Also Mary Stewart “the crystal cave” series.

Have you looked at Audible? There are probably millions of audiobooks, in every single genre. I'm addicted to them.

Asta's Book by Barbara Vine. Free on Audible for plus members. Bloody brilliant.

I've been a member but was listening to just one niche genre for years and I've burned out with that!

I've read all the classics you suggest years ago but actually it'd be interesting to have them read to me.

I've seen Last Kingdom on tv so I'm tempted!

I find the narration is key. Badly read can ruin a book.
Thanks!

Ooh I’d definitely recommend the audiobooks. Last Kingdom ones are excellent, and I loved both the tv series and the books (listened to them first then did the tv series). The overall plot is similar but there’s a lot more in the books, and the tv series does deviate quite a bit in places. All good though!

I’d very much recommend the newish batch of Penguin recordings of the georgette heyers. Great selection of readers. And if you pay for an audible subscription (often highly reduced for first few months) you get access to a big “audible plus” catalogue, which has loads of classic books recordings which are excellent- that’s where I listened to Cranford etc.

Biographies work well as audiobooks I think.

Also the Harry Potter books - Stephen Fry
Anything Stephen Fry reads is good - Mythos
The Jackman Evans series by Joy Ellis are good and included free on the audible membership.

If u fancy something fun. Go for anything by Jodi Taylor as the narrator is Zara Ramm and she is amazing. Or again if u fancy something funny. The clovenhoof books are good. And the narrator is so good.

I’m currently listening to The Crimson Petal and the White, which is read brilliantly. It also works well as an audiobook as it’s written in second person narrative so it draws you in to the world (Victorian London) really quickly.

Another Barbara Kingsolver book is available as an audio-book - got it through our library - the new one: Demon Copperhead.
It's really good - I'm halfway through - and read well (by an actor called Charlie Thurston). The book itself is very chunky, so the audio version is 21 hours! But I love Kingsolver's writing, and don't want it to end...
