50 Books Challenge 2022 Part Seven

Southeastdweller · 30/11/2022 10:19

Welcome to the seventh and (and probably) final thread of the 50 Books Challenge for this year.

The challenge is to read fifty books (or more!) in 2022, though reading fifty isn't mandatory. Any type of book can count, and even though it's late in the year, it’s not too late to join. Please try to let us all know your thoughts on what you've read.

How have you got on this year?

@AliasGrape

Was really enjoying Small Pleasures til the end. Was absolutely fuming. Woeful ending

MamaNewtNewt · 02/01/2023 21:10

Looking forward to the list @PermanentTemporary . Just to check does the list of names mean you aren't including the bolds of all 50 bookers that have posted their list, just a sample? No worries if so, it just means I'll probably run through at some point to check other bolds from those you haven't included.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 02/01/2023 21:13

It's all bolds and how many times bolds were bold IIRC

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 02/01/2023 21:22

And that wasn't the question you asked. D' oh, sorry

Terpsichore · 02/01/2023 21:59

Thanks for putting in the work @PermanentTemporary - really looking forward to seeing the results 😊

WHAT WE BOLDED - Top Authors

Phew, sorry, long book club! I'm quite liking Dry January book club as well.

A new look at the data compared to last year. This is a list of authors who got more than one mention - either for the same book or for multiple different works. There is a fairly runaway winner, who didn't surprise me given what I've read on the thread, and a very solid top ten who perhaps don't give many gasps of amazement either. They do I think give an idea of what a lot of us were enjoying this year, and show the influence of the readalongs too.

Patrick Radden Keefe 7
Maggie O'Farrell 6
Claire Keegan 5
Marian Keyes 5
Wilkie Collins 5

WHAT WE BOLDED 2022 - the books

A much shorter list this year, but somehow much more thinly spread - perhaps people are getting pickier with their bolds?? Anyway, my love of this data set is due to the fact that any book could be on it for any reason - I love the randomness of it.

Here are a slightly arbitrary Top 7, which are the books bolded by at least 3 contributors.

The Woman in White Wilkie Collins 5
Empire of Pain Patrick Radden Keefe 5
Foster Claire Keegan 4
Again, Rachel Marian Keyes 4
Hamnet Maggie O'Farrell 3
Cloud Cuckoo Land Anthony Doerr 3
The Marriage Portrait Maggie O'Farrell 3

Piggywaspushed · 02/01/2023 22:47

noodlezoodle · 03/01/2023 03:08

Thank you for that @PermanentTemporary, it must have taken forever! Fascinating stuff - we're an eclectic lot, aren't we?!

ChessieFL · 03/01/2023 07:13

Ooh, interesting! Thanks Permanent. My bolds weren’t included but if they had been Marian Keyes and Wilkie Collins would have been bumped up the author list, and Nigel Slater’s Christmas Chronicles would have made it on to the top books list!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 03/01/2023 07:20

Thanks @PermanentTemporary
There are lots here that I don’t recognise.

Worth saying again, I think, that since so many people liked The Woman in White then maybe 2023 could be the year of more Wilkie.

nowanearlyNicemum · 03/01/2023 07:57

Many thanks for crunching the numbers @PermanentTemporary A wonderfully eclectic collection! And plenty that have been added to my TBR list!

MamaNewtNewt · 03/01/2023 08:21
