Hello!

Looking to search the hive mind for some book recommendations.

Each year, me and my brother buy eachother 6 books, then each month we take it in turns who's book we read and discuss. Looking for some ideas for this year's haul!

Things we've previously enjoyed:

A man called Ove
Rivers of London
The blinds

Happy with anything really except romance. Like trying lots of different genres!

So - what's your favourite book?!

Thanks all!

Half of a yellow sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, captain correllis mandolin by Louis de Bernieres and Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier were my favourites from what I've read this year.

TheGoodEnoughWife · 30/11/2022 22:06

The Secrets of Strangers. So good and a great one to discuss afterwards imo.

For great discussion I’d recommend Mad Honey by Jodi Picoult and Jenny Flynn Boylan

Having revisited this list during an amazon binge I realised I asked for non fiction when I actually wanted fiction. Baby brain? Is that still a thing at this point?

Any fiction books greatly appreciated. I've got a couple from this list now!

A Gentleman in Moscow
Hearts Invisible Furies
All The Light We Cannot See

PermanentTemporary · 09/12/2022 16:57

Girl by Edna O'Brien is a fantastic book, best fiction read of the last couple of years.

nobird · 14/12/2022 21:45

The Buried Giant - Kazuo Ishiguro
Poor Things - Alasdair Gray
The Sound and The Fury - William Faulkner
The Anomaly - Herve Le Tellier
The Guest List - Lucy Foley
Piranesi - Susanna Clarke

PritiPatelsMaker · 16/12/2022 07:30

Second the suggestion of A Gentleman in Moscow. That's such a wonderful book.

How about Love Marriage by Monica Ali or Autumn by Ali Smith?

Olivia199 · 16/12/2022 13:04

Thank you all, amazing suggestions!!

Favourite recent reads have been
White Woman on The Green Bicycle by Monique Roffey, although Mermaid of the Black Conch is maybe more unusual.

I Know This Much Is True by Wally Lamb I loved. Also his one loosely linked to the Columbine tragedy might he interesting discussion with but I frly got a bit clumsy, and She's Come Undone is fantastic but there's maybe less to discuss.

Have The Men Had Enough by Margret Forster and We Have Always Lived In The Castle really stayed with me. The latter is something of a melodrama, a bit daft but really unsettling somehow which is a skill.

I like all of Hannah Kent's books and there's a historical bent too.

@Olivia199 it's a lovely idea BTW. Wish I had someone I could do that with. Be interested to hear what you end up with!
