Undemanding read but not thriller

I love reading but have read a lot of heavy going/serious/sad books lately. Life is a bit heavy going atm and I feel like I need some light-ish/easyish reads. Only thing I don't like are thrillers. Recommendations greatly received

Taylor Jenkins Reid might be what you need,? Trashy and delicious. Loved Malibu Rising and Daisy Jones.

Beautiful people and beautiful locations and sad happy stories.

The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman

I'd also say Marian Keyes but her last book really got me with a dagger in the heart twist, loved it though

Edmund Crispin. Elizabeth Jane Howard. Mavis Cheek!

Thrown by Sara Cox

I second the Taylor Jenkins Reid books. I loved Daisy Jones and the Six and The seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo. Also, liked Malibu Rising but not as much as the other two.

I've just finished Mrs England by Stacey Halls. I found it an easy read and really enjoyed it.

Nora Roberts all the way!
She's my comfort read, alongside Georgette Heyer, who O also recommend highly.

Sometimes we just need the good guys to prevail!

Second the Thursday Murder Club books. The Agatha Raisin book series is very easy reading too

Enjoying Dark Tides by Philippa Gregory right now.

You might want to try
Em and Me by Beth Morrey
Miss Benson's Beetle by Rachel Joyce
The Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes
Any book in the Number 1 Ladies Detective Agency series by Alexander Mccall Smith.

Weirdly I really enjoy certain memoirs for light and non depressing reading. Obviously not the abused child misery lit genre of memoirs. I especially like actors’ memoirs, or movie directors, things like that. You tend to spend most of your time being more like ‘huh, I didn’t know that was how they did xyz in films’ or ‘that’s interesting, I didn’t know that actor was considered in that film.’ So it’s more light/interesting than really heavy.

I also love an Agatha Christie. Obviously there’s all the murders but nobody ever actually reacts to them like a murder - more like an interesting little puzzle. So as the reader you never really feel like ‘oh my god, a thriller, murders.’

I'd highly recommend anything by Nick Spalding if you want lighthearted- will have you laughing out loud!

Squirrelsnut · 03/01/2023 21:16

The Thursday Next series for lighthearted but clever fun.
