Very few people seem to know who he is (though most have heard of his books when you mention them (Reginald Perrin, Pratt of the Argus, etc.) which is a great big shame...

Going Gently is the one book I've loaned out over and over again and never found anybody who didn't love it.

At his best the man can make you laugh your head off and cry all at once. He is a genius and I love him .

Yes - I love Reginald Perrin but haven't read any others. Very true that he can make you laugh your head off and cry all at once.

Thanks for recommendation of Going Gently - will order it.

what is it about ladymixalot ? am looking for inspiration for bookgroup...I always think of David Lodge...he is ace too

It's about a 99-year-old woman in hospital who can't move or communicate, replaying her life in her head and trying to figure out which of her three sons killed one of her husbands (of whom she's had six). Basically it's her life story. First time I read it I was drinking coffee on a train, was taken unawares by a hilarious line and actually spat it onto the book . Got a disgusted look from the man opposite.

TheFallenMadonna · 30/01/2008 12:30

Ooh yes. Going Gently. I bought it from Oxfam last summer and it was one of my holiday reads. I loved it. And so did DH, and we don't usually agree on books at all.

I loved loved loved all the Pratt books. Read them in my teens. Adored them.

Going Gently was utterly fab too. I particularly loved it because no one recommended it and it didn't come with any hype and then it was probably the best book I read that year.

Sex And Other Changes... not so great I found.

ladymixalot · 30/01/2008 12:37

MaryAnnS - I've only read Paradise News of his, but I did enjoy it. Can you recommend another one?

How far can you go was the first David Lodge I read, then The British M,useum is Falling Down...this was many years ago though...

Botbot · 30/01/2008 13:53

Haven't read it for years but I loved Second From Last in the Sack Race. Can't remember the details, but I remember roffling at somebody shouting 'the bread van' in school assembly.

Love David Lodge too - he's one of my faves.

fryalot · 30/01/2008 13:54

wasn't too impressed with Sex and Other Changes either tbh... in fact, if you want, you can have my copy

ladymixalot · 30/01/2008 14:12

S'all right Squonk, thanks - I don't want to diminish my opinion of him!
