Is she ever going to write another book or has she lain down her pen?

Sarah, if you are on here-please hurry along with a new book.

@DaisyMiller84 excellent thank you! Hope she gets a wriggle on. Just left hospital with good news & now this. It's a good day 😁

MalcolmTuckersSwearBox · 08/01/2024 16:29

Oooh, thanks for that post @DaisyMiller84. I'm another Sarah Waters fan, this thread has reminded me of her and prompted a re-read.

Turkeyhen · 08/01/2024 16:30

I watched an interview with her maybe a year ago in which she was talking about her new 1950s-set novel, I got the impression that she takes a long time doing research.

The Little Stranger is my favourite and then The Paying Guests. Absolutely brilliant.

fireplacetiles · 08/01/2024 16:32

Also a huge fan and delighted to hear she has a new book coming out. Fingersmith is my all time favourite book with the best twist ever. I remember giving it to my daughter to read and she came running into my bedroom at THAT moment going- what? What? Omg mum!! Sooo good❤️

ChihuahuasREvil · 08/01/2024 16:40

I love The Night Watch, it’s probably one of my favourite books ever. I’ve only read The Little Stranger once, ages ago, so now I’m thinking I need to read it again. Oh, I so hope she publishes a new book soon, she’s one of the very few authors I’ll pay hardback prices for.

Needhelp101 · 08/01/2024 17:34

This is good new year news 🙂

Just reread The Paying Guests, it's not my favourite but it's very enjoyable (in a sweaty, anxious way!)

Hello and thanks for writing. Sarah is deep into her new book and I hope we will have it before too long. Keep watching!

message from her publisher

Woo-hoo 🙌🏻

Thank you for the update. So happy to hear of more Sarah Waters' incoming. Fingersmith was the one that hooked me but the Little Stranger and Affinity were close seconds.

Looking forward to another to add to the nook, yes SW you have a nook.

Fabulous news!!

LaDerniereVacheFolle · 08/01/2024 18:02

I also used to have the Paying Guests but some cheeky guest of mine borrowed it and didn't bring it back ...

tothesea · 08/01/2024 18:09

The Paying Guests is my favourite of hers. I could ‘see’ every corner of the house in my mind. Such beautiful descriptive writing.
I do love them all though and I’m due a re-read.
Fingers crossed though for a new book very soon.

No twist has ever hit me so hard! I remember I was reading it in my living room and I was so shocked I had to go and have a walk round the block to calm down! Such a wonderful book.

tobee · 09/01/2024 02:03

Hooray a new book!

HowIWroteElasticWoman · 09/01/2024 03:31

I've just read Tipping the Velvet! I'm reading Affinity just now ! I read Fingersmith when it came out and then forgot all about her and now I have rediscovered her ! She is marvellous!

JaninaDuszejko · 09/01/2024 06:15

For those of you who love Fingersmith read The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins.

LuciusMalfoysBestSneer · 09/01/2024 07:58

Another Sarah Waters fan here! The Paying Guests is my favourite - like a PP said, I have every nook and cranny of that house visualised in my head thanks to the amazing language.

Yes everything absolutely rang true about the period details. And all the characters stay with me.

CharlottePimpernel · 09/01/2024 17:15

Oh hooray! I love her books. They're the only books I buy new.
The Paying Guests and The Night Watch are my favourites, then Affinity, then Fingersmith, Tipping The Velvet and The Little Stranger.
You can just see everything so beautifully. And they're so sad, but lovely at the same time.

Alchemistress · 09/01/2024 17:20

I was only wondering what had happened to SW the other day. I also love Tracy Chevalier.
I've just finished A Single Thread and it was just wonderful.

QuietFlame · 09/01/2024 17:29

I loved ‘A Single Thread ‘ too,and everything Sarah Waters’ has written.
I enjoy reading ‘between the wars ‘ fiction and agree ‘The Paying Guests’ had a wonderful sense of time and place.
Excited to hear she has a new one on the way!

BaconAndAvocado · 16/01/2024 17:12

Fingersmith is on my book group’s list this year, so I’m now looking forward to that!

Footle · 18/01/2024 08:20

@SundownOnTheStair , thanks for the thread. I haven't read any of her books, I'd confused her with another Sarah, but I've started The Paying Guests and I'm hoping I've found an author to love.

Envious here of you reading it for the first time !

CharlotteRumpling · 18/01/2024 10:04

I have found my people. I adore her, and I think it is a travesty that she never got a Booker. Glad to know she is writing a new one.

My ranking:

Fingersmith
The Little Stranger
Affinity
The Paying Guests
Tipping the Velvet
The Nightwatch

I also love Donna Tartt and Daphne Du Maurier.

BaconAndAvocado · 18/01/2024 10:37

What’s Fingersmith about ?

NO SPOILERS!

countrypunk · 18/01/2024 10:39

I also love Donna Tartt! I've reread The Secret History more than any other book, it fascinates me. I thought The Goldfinch could do with an edit in parts but overall it was stunning.

Surprised that The Night Watch is so far down the list for lots of people here, I thought it was so moving. Has everyone seen the TV adaptation?

Agree that Sarah Waters should have won the Booker by now.
