All the light we cannot see. I think bits are set in London... I can't remember but it's brilliant!!!!

Elizabeth Jane Howard’s Cazalet Chronicles start in the 1930s and span the war years. Partly set in London and also in the country

clarepetal · 13/11/2022 19:35

I second the Cazalets. They are amazing.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 13/11/2022 19:39

Anthony Quinn - can't remember titles offhand, but I think a couple of his are set in wartime London.

Yes to All the Light, although I was very disappointed with the ending.

Kate Atkinson - Transcription
Sarah Waters - The Night Watch

think they are are both sent wholly in London, loved both of them.

The New Mrs Clifton by Elizabeth Buchan.

SorrelForbes · 13/11/2022 19:48

Requiem for A Wren (not set in London though)

NancyJoan · 13/11/2022 19:50

The Rose Code, Kate Quinn. Set at Bletchley, not in London.

NancyJoan · 13/11/2022 19:53

The Chamomile Lawn is an old fave.

Frenchcroissant · 13/11/2022 19:54

The century trilogy by Ken Fillet, the second book it's about world war two and London.

Frenchcroissant · 13/11/2022 19:54

Follet!

The Whalebone Theatre Joanna Quinn, though a lot is in France as well as London.
Everyone Brave is Forgiven Chris Cleave.

If you can find it, In Spite of all Terror by Hester Burton. A fifteen year old grammar school girl is evacuated from the East End to Oxfordshire. The book covers how she settles in with her host family, Dunkirk and London in the Blitz.

Also, Murder by Matchlight, a Golden Age murder mystery by E.C.R. Lorac. Available on Faded Page: www.fadedpage.com/showbook.php?pid=20200435

Yes, Cazalets! Wonderful!
And Life after Life by Kate Atkinson is breath-taking x

IShouldProbablyHooverMore · 13/11/2022 21:09

I loved The Night Watch! Was going to recommend it, but see you've already read it.

Seeline · 13/11/2022 21:09

The Avenue books by RF Delderfield

Sweetlikechocolate6 · 13/11/2022 21:10

Thunder in the Sky by Molly Lefubre it’s based on her own experiences but fiction but it was very atmospheric . Elizabeth Bowen Heat of the Day gets very good reviews as well although it’s years since I read it .

Namechange652 · 13/11/2022 21:16

Loved life after life, liked the TV adaption too.

Have you read any Diney Costelloe’s?

Riverlee · 13/11/2022 21:19

Machine Gunners - Robert Westall
Dolphin Crossing - Jill Paton Walsh

Both children’s books, but are favourites of mine.

AngelicaElizaAndPeggy · 13/11/2022 21:20

To second @FormerCarer@FormerCarerThe Former Mrs Clifton by Elizabeth Buchan is a beautiful, achingly moving book. It's set during the immediate aftermath of WW2, and I read it during the second lock down. The dreariness, guilt and beaurocratic annoyances resonated in such a profound way.

Riverlee · 13/11/2022 21:20

Farleigh Fields - Rhys Bowen

Riverlee · 13/11/2022 21:21

V2 - Robert Harris

3totheright4totheleft · 13/11/2022 21:29

Also Robert Harris - Enigma
Yet another vote for the Cazalets
Saplings by Noel Streatfeild - it's one of her adult books, really enjoyed it
