I may have bought a few books today. Where do I start?

I went to another town today that has far more charity shops than my own town does and I may have gone a little overboard. There were charity bookshelves in the supermarket too so this collection is between them all.

Where should I start? Any recommendations welcome.

TIA

What a haul! I’ve just read and lives Small Pleasures, so that gets my vote.

piglet81 · 10/11/2022 13:46

*loved, not lives

Minikievs · 10/11/2022 13:47

I have also just read Small Pleasures in the last couple of weeks and loved it ❤️

Yellowdahlia12 · 10/11/2022 13:53

I enjoyed Watership Down when I read it.

BooksBooksEverywhereAndNotABookToRead · 10/11/2022 16:49

Thanks for the recommendations all. I appreciate it.

I got lucky. My book hauls are rarely this good or extensive.

I'm especially excited by the Persephone classics. Those can be difficult to find in charity shops and I only have 3 others.

Wow that’s an amazing haul! I need to move town!

senua · 10/11/2022 16:58

Another vote for Small Pleasures. It's a lovely book, beautifully written.

Needaholidaypronto · 10/11/2022 17:00

have Read Small Pleasures and The Wicked Cometh, can recommend both! Love a secondhand book rummage 😍

The Victorian Chaise Longue is fab for a long winter evening.

ramonaquimby · 10/11/2022 17:04

Etta, Otto, Russell & James was very good

tobee · 10/11/2022 17:04

Little Boy Blue jumps out at me there.

AlbertaWildRose · 10/11/2022 17:06

I read The 100 years of Lenni and Margot recently and absolutely loved it!

I may have to move town too Grin Actually, better not or I'll bankrupt myself in the charity shops.

Great haul!

Start with the two Marghanita Laskis and make Little Boy Lost the first one. You won’t be able to put it down and you’ll find yourself racing through the last pages desperate to know the end.

CatChant · 10/11/2022 18:11

Watership Down is a wonderful story. I, Claudius is very readable, as is Under the Skin, and both South Riding, and Life and Fate are great choices for long winter evenings.

I don’t think I’ve ever read a Persephone book that I haven’t enjoyed so yes, do keep an eye out for them OP.

sallyjuliet · 10/11/2022 18:49

I’ve read and loved The Victorian Chaise Longue- it was very creepy! And I really want to read Under the Skin after hearing a good review for it on A Goodread podcast :)

TonTonMacoute · 10/11/2022 22:28

Wow, you have done amazingly well!

Monsieur Linh and his Child is a very quick read. Recommended!

StrangerOnline · 11/11/2022 07:13

What a coincidence! I re-read Watershipship Down a few weeks ago (after about 40 years) - still holds up, great story-telling

CrossPurposes · 12/11/2022 08:45

I second (or third) Little Boy Lost. A gem of a book.

MyCrumpetIsCold · 12/11/2022 08:49

The 100 Years Of Lenni and Margot is an absolutely lovely read!

Thank you all. I really appreciate the book recommendations and hopefully they'll save me from book paralysis, which is what I get when I'm looking at my collection and trying to decide what to read. I'll prioritise those mentioned on the thread.

I went to the local supermarket today and picked up another few. These should see me through the Winter.

Ooh, put A Patchwork Planet on your ‘must read’ list. Anne Tyler is wonderfully readable and this is one of my favourites.

BooksBooksEverywhereAndNotABookToRead · 12/11/2022 20:04

CatChant Thanks for the recommendation. I'll definitely do that. I haven't read any of her books so it's helpful to have a place to start.

I went off Monsieur Linh.
