Fiction or non fiction please. Really want to get absorbed in a good book.

Any recommendations gratefully received.

Dark Matter by Michelle Paver - supernatural and very eerie.

I liked Salt Path. She pretty much alternates non-stop between judging everyone and obsessing about food. I can get on board with that Grin

Just read The Sea by John Banville where the sea is almost a character itself.

Zosime · 10/10/2022 13:22

The Shetland Sailing Mysteries by Marsali Taylor. Crime series set, as the name suggests, mostly around Shetland. Lots of sailing - the main character lives on her own yacht.

The Riddle of the Sands - pre WW1 ripping yarn set on the German North Sea coast. Sort of Arthur Ransome meets John Buchan. And Arthur Ransome himself of course. Some of his books are set at sea, rather than on inland waters.

I loved it but it's not liked on here

Mogginsthemog · 10/10/2022 14:02

I loved The Salt Path, I know most of that coastline well and thought it was brilliant.

Holy Folls by Joanne Harris, set in Noirmoutier, historical, but I really want to go there.

Wakenhyrst by Michelle Paver, set by the marsh and sea.

Patrick Gale has written a few books set in Cornwall, all v good.

junebirthdaygirl · 10/10/2022 14:16

The Shipping News Annie Proulx is excellent..Loved that book

Another vote for Rebecca. TOTALLY absorbing. Truly gripping. And set mostly in Cornwall.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 10/10/2022 14:27

The Daphne du Maurier suggestions above are both brilliant.
I loved Moonfleet by J. Meade Falkner when I was younger.

Hoolihan · 10/10/2022 14:27

Loved the John Banville and Michelle Paver books mentioned above.

The Outrun by Amy Liptrot is brilliant - autobiographical about her dysfunctional life in London in her 20s and retreat to her childhood home in the Orkneys. Lots of sea and sky.

theemmadilemma · 10/10/2022 14:30

All the Elly Griffiths Ruth Galloway books. She lives in a cottage on the salt marshes by the sea.

GiantPiggyCages · 10/10/2022 14:33

I enjoyed ‘The lost lights of St Kilda’.

countingdownagain · 10/10/2022 14:37

I found my tribe.

Blix · 10/10/2022 14:44

The Ruth Galloway series by Elly Griffiths. Gentle witty crime set on Norfolk coast.

SolInvictus · 10/10/2022 15:18

I didn't hate Dark Matter, I just didn't get the hype. It's been a MN favourite for years, with almost everyone talking about the scary menacing supernatural bits.
Well, unless someone tore those bits out of my copy, they passed me right by!
I have The North Water and the Salt Path on my Kindle. May give them a bash soon.

JaneJeffer · 10/10/2022 15:24

I saw Dark Matter recommended but I borrowed the wrong one from the library and ended up reading a time travel story by Blake Crouch which actually I really enjoyed Grin

FoxyLadyBoutique · 10/10/2022 15:30

The sea, the sea, by Iris Murdoch is brilliant. Coincidentally, two of my friends happened to read it around the same time, and they thought it was great.

The Summer Book by Tove Jansson (set on a tiny island) is absolutely delightful.

EndlessMagpies · 10/10/2022 15:31

Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach (life and times of a seagull).

The Last Lighthouse Keeper by Alan Titchmarsh (lightweight, but enjoyable).

Brilliant!! Thank you all so much. I will work my way through all these recommendations.

@Laska2Meryls Funnily enough I recently finished The Lamplighters which is what prompted my question! I really enjoyed it. Thank you Smile

It was great, wasn't i.
. But lots of good recommendations here.. looking forward to checking some out .

The Nesting - set by the Norwegian fjords rather than the sea but bloody beautiful and chilling

DesMoulinsRouge · 11/10/2022 19:23

I loved the Poldark books, especially the later ones when their children were older.

Jamaica Inn, Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier but also a lesser known one of hers called The House on the Strand.

Vinylloving · 11/10/2022 19:25

The Mercies by Kiran Millwood hargrave, very absorbing, lots of interesting themes, women's independence, religion, witch hunts, set in a coastal village in norway

Happyelfjokeday · 11/10/2022 19:30

I was just going to say The Mercies! So it’s been seconded 😀
Also could try the Light Between Oceans

Yayasisterhood · 11/10/2022 19:31

Hot Milk by Deborah Levy - the audible version is read by Saoirse Ronan and is so beautiful and gripping.
