What next? Loved The Cazalet Chronicles. I really wanted more of them but sadly there won't be any more. It's up there with my all time favourite family saga, Poldark.

Looking for suggestions as to what to read next.

Rosamunde Pilcher! Coming Home and The Shellseekers are two of my favourite books, I also love the Cazalet Chronicles.

Beryl Kingston as well - the Tuppenny Times series are good, and Hearts and Farthings.

I'm just reading the first cazalet book and in terms of tone if not subject matter you might enjoy Raffaella Barker (Hens Dancing, in particular) or Nina Stibbe (Love, Nina)

Oh I'm glad you enjoyed it, the Cazalets are brilliant! I got so invested!

FuzzyPuffling · 18/10/2022 20:54

I love both the Cazalets and the Poldarks so am on your page, but cannot think of another run of books of the same genre that come anywhere near.

I entertain myself with "cosy crime" ( Elly Griffiths/ Stephanie Austin) because I care about the characters, and that's probably what matters.

Penny Vincenzi's spoils of time trilogy (no angel, something dangerous and into temptation) is a similar upper class family with a publishing firm follows them from 1920s to 60s. I read it before I read the cazelets chronicles

Agree with Rosamund Pilcher's homecoming I was bereft when I finished reading it

It's quite old but you might enjoy The Dreaming Suburb and The Avenue Goes to War by RF Delderfield.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 21/10/2022 00:28

Susan Howatch wrote a few big fat family saga type books. Penmarric is one

Elena Ferrante might be up your street?

All of Maeve Bincjy's 1950s set novels such as Light A Penny Candle, Echoes, etc,

And yes, Rosamund Pilcher. Coming Home is a lovely cosy read. The Shell Seekers wasn't as good as I remembered it. Found them all quite annoying when I read it years later!

If it's a family saga you're after then Cynthia Harrod-Eagles' Morland Dynasty series should keep you busy for a while! There's 36 books and they span the Wars of the Roses to the death of George V.

ChubbyBroccoli · 23/10/2022 09:14

Also the Horseman Riding By trilogy

I really love Canaletto chronicles. Have you read Elizabeth Jane Howard’s autobiography? A lot of the books is are based on her real life.

IGoWalkingAfterMidnight · 23/10/2022 09:24

Maybe The Forsyte Saga by John Galsworthy?

applecatchers36 · 23/10/2022 09:25

Yes Elizabeth Jane Howard's biography is good. Definitely worth a read.

Mary Wesley's novels might fit the bill, Chamomile lawn, jumping the queue, etc..She was described as Jane Austen with sex.
