I expected my most read author to be Kate Atkinson but it turns out it’s Pat Barker. I’ve only got 2 more Barkers to read then I’ve ran out until her next one comes out in 2024. There is a new Atkinson and Harris out this month and I haven’t read the latest Aaronovitch / Rivers of London yet so that’ll be a few more to add to the list.

Pat barker 13
Kate Atkinson 11
Robert Harris 10
Ben Aaronovitch 8
Margaret Atwood 7
CJ Sansom 7

OP posts:

Neil Gaiman
JK Rowling (including Robert Galbraith)
Isabel Allende
Margaret Atwood

Want to mention Diane Setterfield and Susanna Clarke here - neither of them have written very much but I have adored everything they’ve written.

Gonksmum · 24/09/2022 22:23

I'd say: Helen Dunmore, Sebastian Falkes, Ian McEwan, Emma Donahue, Alice Hoffman. Also - Kate Atkinson. (Also in order of preference).

Tigresswoods · 24/09/2022 22:23

Sue Townsend

Gonksmum · 24/09/2022 22:25

Oh yes, had all the Adrian Moles, so Sue Townsend (best laughs in these).

Helgadaley · 24/09/2022 22:32

I'm so pleased to see authors like Enid Blyton, Agatha Christie and Jean Plaidy on here. So many people seems to be what I call 'book snobs' and won't acknowledge the sheer talent of so many popular authors such as Maeve Binchy and Catherine Cookson. I often try to read books that have won The Booker Prize ans find them nearly all so, so pretentious.

Helgadaley · 24/09/2022 22:32

Seem, not seems.

Ridingthegravytrain · 24/09/2022 22:39

Stephen king for me too. Though @TattiePants I'm half way through his latest and so disappointed. I've read everything and had this on pre order. If you've not read much by him I'd say there are plenty of far better. It's been sitting on my table untouched for over a week.

Anyway other authors are Ann Tyler, Lee child (until his son took over,) jilly cooper, Neil Gaiman, Iain m banks

Off the top of my head: Charles Dickens, Margaret Atwood, Thomas Hardy, Stephen King, David Mitchell, Winston Graham, Patricia Cornwell, Sarah Dunnant, Sarah Walters, Jane Austen.

Childhood authors would have been: Roald Dahl, Jill Murphy, Enid Blyton and R L Stine!

MegBusset · 24/09/2022 22:49

According to my Goodreads, as an adult:

Stephen King - 13

Peter Ackroyd - 9
Kurt Vonnegut - 8
John Steinbeck - 8
Iain Sinclair - 8
Hilary Mantel (RIP) - 8

Must be Stephen King. Then maybe Daphne Du Maurier.

Actually scrap that. It's Francine Pascal! Grin

Ineedwinenow · 25/09/2022 00:40

I read so many books ( mainly crime based and lots of different authors) but I have a huge fictitious crush on Jack Reacher so Lee Childs is one I read over and over!

BrandyandGinger · 25/09/2022 09:26

I just looked up Harlan Coben on Wikipedia and he's written about 30 books and I've read a lot of them so he's an addition to my earlier list. I also read about 12 or 13 of the Jack Reacher books and about the same number of the Peter Robinson mysteries. I read all the Sookie Stackhouse books when True Blood was in it's heyday.
Great idea for a thread, OP. It's nice to look back at all the enjoyment reading has given us.

Dare I admit that I've never read any Terry Pratchett! I'm a bit daunted by the number of Discworld books and which order to read them. Where should I start?

Where to start with Pratchett is probably a thread in itself.

For Discworld, I wouldn't start with book one (Colour of Magic). I'd either go for 'Equal Rites' then follow the witches through or for :Guards Guards' and follow the City Watch. City Watch if you want police procedural (with dragons) Witches if you want some female empowerment (mostly older women) and Shakespeare.

Or skip Discworld completely and go for 'Good Omens' or 'Nation'.

HappydaysArehere · 25/09/2022 10:22

This year it has been Robert Harris.
Read the Cicero trilogy. (Magnificent)
An Officer and a Spy (So interesting)
Pompeii. ( good but nowhere as brilliant as the three. Cicero books.)
Fatherland but not finished.

ChagSameachDoreen · 25/09/2022 12:05

Anita Brookner.

notawittyname1954 · 26/09/2022 12:58

Because there are so many books in these series
Cynthia Harrod-Eagles - the Morland Dynasty
Phil Rickman - The Merrily Watkins Series
Winston Graham - Poldark series
Barbara Erskine
Seem to have read a lot of Lisa Jewell
Read a lot of Jean Plaidy and Georgette Heyer back in the day

mamaduckbone · 26/09/2022 19:26

Ooh, that's an interesting question...I'm not going to count children's books. Predicting Kate Atkinson or Joanne Harris, but I'll report back when I've counted up.

Strokethefurrywall · 26/09/2022 19:31

Harlan Coben

mamaduckbone · 26/09/2022 19:32

I think it's a 3-way tie between Kate Atkinson, Joanne Harris and Margaret Atwood - 11 each.

Topseyt123 · 26/09/2022 19:37

Ben Aaronovitch (Rivers of London series is ace),
Jodi Taylor (Chronicles of St. Mary's)
Genevieve Cogman (Invisible Library series)
Benedict Jacka (Alex Verus series)
Alexander McCall Smith (No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency).

I've also now started on Jim Butcher (Harry Dresden files).

For children's books I loved Enid Blyton. Also Nancy Drew Mysteries. And of course J K Rowling for Harry Potter.
