I was about to start Hamnet this week, but after the queen died I need some uplifting funny book recommendations.

I'm going to pull out Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day off the book shelf. What else can you all recommend?

Blandings or Jeeves and Wooster maybe.
The two Hyman Kaplan books are funny too.

Agree with Wodehouse, everything feels better after Wodehouse. Some more period comedies:
Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons (be warned, Flora's parents die of Spanish Flu in the first sentence but after that it's all joyful)
The Pursuit of Love and Love in a Cold Climate by Nancy Mitford
Diary of a Provincial Lady by EM Delafield

A bit more recent I always find the No 1 Ladies Detective Agency series by Alexander McCall Smith a comforting read.

I liked Emma Kennedy’s two books - ‘The Tent, The Bucket and Me’ and ‘I Left My Tent in San Francisco’ as she tells travel/holiday related stories from when she was young. Always liked the Adrian Mole series too. A pp suggested Diary of a Provincial Lady for a more period book which also was very funny.

The Rosie Project
Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine
The Uncommon Reader (about the Queen finding a mobile library - it's utterly charming)

The Salt Path by Raynor Winn is the very definition of uplifting! Smile

A lighthearted silly/funny fiction read is A Far Cry from Kensington by Muriel Spark

ShowTime80 · 15/09/2022 13:37

I found Elinor Oliphant a bit depressing actually.

JaninaDuszejko · 15/09/2022 15:12

Oh, Adrian Mole is a good laugh out loud suggestion. It's even better to read as the parent of a 13 yo than when I read it as a 13yo myself.

No 1 Ladies Detective Agency books are so wise and gentle and full of beautifully drawn characters, especially Mma Ramotswe. I always enjoy the last paragraph of the books. Mma Ramotswe always muses on the countryside or her family in her loving wise way. Feel good definitely.

The Enchanted April
Thornyhold by Mary Stewart
Howls Moving Castle

not comedy exactly but quite soothing

@LloydsBlackHorse I've never heard of The Uncommon Reader - I will definitely pick this up down the line after mourning the Queen.

I also thought of the No1 ladies detective agency when I read the thread title.

I like Fran ‘N Stand Bucket list Also, currently reading Patricia Flisher mysteries, which are light hearted and fun.

I don’t think Eleanor Oliphant is that light either..
