Welcome to the Mumsnet 'Rather Dated' Book Group, where we will be reading and discussing fiction from the 1930s to the 1990s that would have been described as 'contemporary' in its day.

The best introduction to the 'rather dated' concept would be to read the wonderful thread which inspired this group:

www.mumsnet.com/talk/what_were_reading/4596284-rather-dated?reply=119670989

To summarise, a number of posters expressed disappointment that literature of the 20th Century is often dismissed as 'rather dated' because society has moved on from many of the values and lifestyles described.

We decided to create a reading group where the literary merits of such fiction can be appreciated, with any 'rather dated' elements being a point of interest rather than a reason to dismiss a novel.

We will be reading one book a month. Our first book, for September, will be the book that inspired the original thread:

The Road to Lichfield by Penelope Lively

Please do join the thread whether you want to take part in the discussion or just place mark to follow it.

Fellow Rather Dated people, please add anything important I might have missed!

(With huge thanks to ImJustMadAboutSaffron for the original thread and idea Flowers)

Just popping in to say that I've finished Mrs Palfrey at the Claremont and will start the thread for the chat on 1 May.

Meanwhile I'm on to another Elizabeth Taylor, The Soul of Kindness, until we decide on our next (June) book. Any suggestions very welcome.

Terpsichore · 25/04/2023 12:05

I love The Soul of Kindness, @MotherofPearl - so, so horrifyingly good!

StellaOlivetti · 25/04/2023 16:33

I’m starting Mrs Palfrey tomorrow. Have been delayed by The Age of Innocence, which I’ve just finished, having wanted to read it for ages. “Horrifyingly good” is an excellent description of Elizabeth Taylor, I think.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 25/04/2023 19:41

I'm looking forward to starting Mrs Palfrey :)

IceandIndigo · 25/04/2023 21:07

I’m nearly finished Mrs Palfrey.

How about The Feast by Margaret Kennedy for the next book? Read this recently and would love to discuss it.

TragicMuse · 25/04/2023 22:31

I ADORE Elizabeth Taylor! I think Angel is probably my favourite...

I've just looked it up as I don't know this author and I like the sound of The Feast very much. I'd be happy with this as our next book.

SpikeWithoutASoul · 25/04/2023 23:24

The Feast is amazing. Loved it.

ChessieFL · 26/04/2023 10:39

I’ve got The Feast on my TBR list so happy for this to be next!

BadSpellaSpellaSpella · 26/04/2023 14:38

Haven't heard of The Feast but looks good so I'm also happy to go with this

Terpsichore · 26/04/2023 17:46

Looks good to me, and they’ve even got it in my library!

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 26/04/2023 18:00

It sounds intriguing! I'd love to read it too.

MotherofPearl · 26/04/2023 18:19

Oh good, looks like The Feast it is. Looking forward to discussing Mrs Palfrey in a few days.

Readytostartagain · 28/04/2023 08:50

Can I join please- late as ever. I’m just finishing Mrs Palfrey and the Feast looks good.

MotherofPearl · 28/04/2023 18:50

Welcome @Readytostartagain. Please do join us. The only qualification is liking 'rather dated' novels. Smile

tobee · 28/04/2023 22:12

I read Mrs Palfrey and The Feast last year! I've given The Feast to a few people including my mum who then did it with her book group. Good one for discussion.

MotherofPearl · 12/05/2023 21:08

I'm making good progress with The Feast, having started it a few days ago. I already know who I hope survives and who doesn't!

Terpsichore · 12/05/2023 23:04

I’m really enjoying it.

StellaOlivetti · 13/05/2023 06:03

I’m looking forward to starting it, got to pick it up from the library today. Margaret Kennedy is another writer I’d not heard of, along with Dorothy Whipple, so I’m delighted to have these blanks in my knowledge filled in.

Terpsichore · 13/05/2023 08:40

I certainly hadn’t realised Margaret Kennedy had written so much; The Constant Nymph is the only book of hers I knew because copies were always turning up in charity shops in old editions when I first started book-buying as a teen, and I’ve seen one of the film adaptations (though I still haven’t read it!).

StellaOlivetti · 19/05/2023 12:28

I finished it a few days ago, and have lent my copy to my mum. I’m about to start The Constant Nymph. When do we start discussing?

MotherofPearl · 19/05/2023 17:32

I devoured The Feast (!) in record time. I'd planned to start the discussion thread on 1 June but am happy to set it up now if people would prefer that? I'll be travelling back from holiday on the 1st so might be easier for me anyway.

MotherofPearl · 20/05/2023 09:43

Oh and I'm also straight onto another Margaret Kennedy - 'The Forgotten Smile'.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 20/05/2023 11:54

I haven't started The Feast yet, but I will very soon.

Goneonholsbymistake · 20/05/2023 18:33

About half way through The Feast and really enjoying it!
