Xmas present idea needed please! He's a very boyish boy, not into books that much but I'd like to encourage him ....

does he like funny stories?

If so try Horrid Henry or Miss Whizz

Ds loves them

amynnixmum · 27/11/2004 18:20

My children like the series by Giles Andreae and David Wojtowycz. They are all silly rhyme books.
"Rumble in the jungle", "Commotion in the ocean" and "farmyard hullabaloo". Also another book by Giles Andreae but this time with Nick Sharratt is "Pants". DS and DD (4+6) think this book is hilarios and of course most 5 year old boys find the word "pants" funny.

Dr Seuss

soppy · 27/11/2004 18:21

Ooh, HH looks good - which one?

What about starting to read him a chapter of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory every night? Roald Dahl is fab. We also read Charlotte's Web and have just started on the Famous Five (but ds is 7, may not have liked it earlier. I don't much like reading them, I have to say!) Will post again if I think of anything else.

soppy · 27/11/2004 18:23

Will check all those out, amynnixmum! Oh and Dr Seuss, yes of course

the 1st one is just called

Horrid Henry,

followed by:
HH and the secret club
HH tricks the tooth fairy
HH nits
HH gets rich quick
HH haunted house
HH mummy's curse
HH revenge

Try also "captain underpants" which is very funny too.

My dad gets them very cheaply from book club I think it is, as a set.

soppy · 27/11/2004 18:37

Capt Underpants looks hilarious. Nephew is just about to turn 5 - not too old for him?

Roisin · 27/11/2004 20:04

Jeff Brown's \www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0060097914/qid=1101585631/sr=2-1/ref=sr_2_11_1/026-4812066-4508405\Flat Stanley} books are hysterical. (I was first recommended them on here). The Book People are doing an offer atm - all 5 books for £6.

Or how about a non-fiction book? They can be very popular with reluctant readers. Maybe something about dinosaurs? Or volcanoes?

Roisin · 27/11/2004 20:05

Whoops - what happened there?

Jeff Brown's try this for Flat Stanley

codswallop · 27/11/2004 20:06

Our ds loves Flat Stanley too Roisin. I'd never heard of him before we got the books.
Soppy, does he have any crazes (knights/football/Turtles/monsters) etc, there are usually some good stories about in any of these categories. Ds is knight-obsessed at the mo and likes the Sir Gadabout series as well as King Arthur stories retold for younger children...

Allegra · 27/11/2004 20:53

We like the Mr Majeica series.

Or something like the "Where's Wally" or "Spot What" books. Not stories but great fun and good for encouraging concentration and observation.
DS1(5) loves them.

SecondhandRose · 28/11/2004 09:28

Depends if he's reading on his own as in Tescos they have starting to read books in hardback, think they are £3 each. Unless he's a fantastic reader it will be a while before he can read some of the others unaccompanied. What about an annual then there's lots of pictures too.

soppy · 28/11/2004 18:43

Great selection of suggestions, thanks! Only craze seems to be Spiderman - can't find much in the way of annuals. He's not reading on his own much yet. Will work my way through this list. Many thanks.
