Following as I love funny books and on the lookout for more

Obviously, humour is personal - the ones that made me laugh out loud are:

Sue Townsend’s Adrian Mole books and her ‘confessions of a middle aged woman aged 55 and a half’
Tom Sharpe’s Blott on the landscape and Wilt books
also love the character banter in RD Wingfield’s Frost series likewise the banter in the James Herriot series

Frank and Stan Bucket list

Really enjoyed these books

DeanStockwelll · 15/08/2022 22:14

Any of Gerald Durrell books I find them all good but particularly my family and other animals .
He has such a good way of describing the way animals behave and the way people behave around animals it is fantastic definitely my favourite book

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 15/08/2022 22:15

The Adrian mole books are some of my faves. They make me laugh again and again.

DeanStockwelll · 15/08/2022 22:15

@Pricklesinperil I agree the James Herriot books as well I really like those

AuntieDolly · 15/08/2022 22:23

Clovenhoof! Made me laugh anyway.

escapingthecity · 15/08/2022 22:31

Skios by Michael Frayn
Lessons in Chemistry is surprisingly funny

sorbetseason · 15/08/2022 23:08

My favourite funny books are The Pursuit of Love, Cold Comfort Farm, The Blue Castle, Bridget Jones and The Undomestic Goddess. The last is so light and hilarious but I think people forget how very clever Sophie Kinsella is. It is just so intentionally silly and brilliant and cheering.

Hmm might go and look it up now.

Brefugee · 16/08/2022 08:17

I'll always recommend all the Jeeves and Wooster as amusing books.
Also the Monsieur Pamplemousse series by Michael Bond (yes, paddington chap) French ex-detective turned restaurant reviewer and his trusty dog Pommes Frites

If you like your humour a bit off-beat the 2 Dirk Gently books (Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency and The Long Dark Teatime of the Soul) by Douglas Adams are chaotic and brilliant.

happyharpy78 · 16/08/2022 08:24

Agree with Lessons in Chemistry. Not laugh out loud funny but a lovely amusing book.
For laugh out loud I always recommend The Tent, The Bucket and Me, it's set in the 70s and recounts the authors camping holidays with her hapless family. Easy to read and so funny.

trulyconfuseddotcom · 16/08/2022 08:25

I find Christopher Brookmyre books often make me laugh out loud - if you enjoy murder mysteries then you might enjoy the combination of thriller and humour in these.

ThreeKneeRepeater · 16/08/2022 08:27

Agree with PP about The Tent, The Bucket and Me by Emma Kennedy.
it really is that funny, particularly the chapter about using French hole in the ground toilets in the dark.

itrytomakemyway · 16/08/2022 08:28

The Tent, the bucket and Me - one of the funniest things I have ever read.

The Travels with Boogie series - especially the first one - 500 mile walkies

Tony Hawkes is very funny - Playing Tennis with the Moldovans, Round Ireland With a Fridge, One Hit Wonderland were the best of his books imo.

Another vote for the Hitchhikers series.

HearMeSnore · 16/08/2022 08:30

Bill Bryson is my go-to for light, humorous reading. I find his travel books funnier than his later works on science and life in general but he's always a pleasant read.

Brefugee · 16/08/2022 08:59

if you like amusing Travel Writing then i can thoroughly recommend: Charlie Connolley (Attention All Shipping for starters) Tim Moore (Travels With my Donkey for starters) and Dave Gorman (America Unchained is fab)

And if you want something completely daft, the Stephanie Plum series (starts with One for The Money) is good for the first 11 or so (by Janet Evanovich)

sorbetseason · 16/08/2022 09:55

God I need to retry the tent one as I just didn’t get it first time round! But so consistently recommended on here! I def don’t have odd tastes or sense of humour or anything. Gah.

Yes also Jeeves and Wooster.

ShirleyJackson · 16/08/2022 10:07

The incident with the pencil spolit the tent one for me. Very out of place and dark.

My go-to funny reads are PG Wodehouse, especially Jeeves and Wooster; James Herriot, Bill Bryson, Spike Milligan’s war memoirs, Katherine Heiny (especially Standard Deviations), and Sue Townsend.

HareOverThere · 16/08/2022 10:15

Sweet Pea by CJ Skuse is quite funny and murder not so mystery, if you don’t mind some bits being unnecessarily crude

WildCherryBlossom · 16/08/2022 14:48

Authors who make me laugh:

Douglas Adams
Nick Hornby
Alexander McCall Smith
Nancy Mitford
Barbara Pym
Stephen Fry
Caitlin Moran

One of the funniest books I've read in recent years was The 100 Year old Man Who Climbed Out of A Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson. Brilliant! Sadly I didn't find his next book funny at all

Hooveslikejagger · 16/08/2022 16:55

Adrian Mole - any
Bridget Jones - any
The Tent The Bucket and Me
Sweet Pea. - dark humour
In Bloom - dark humour
Sex, lies and chocolate cake

I came on to say how to kill your family, it’s one of the only books that’s made me laugh out loud!
