After dystopian and post-apocalyptic novels to take on holiday

Hoping that if I share my tastes, people might be able to suggest some good reads for my holiday.

Examples of books I have loved: Station Eleven, The Quiet at the End of the World, The Girl With All the Gifts, The Handmaid’s Tale, Red Clocks, Lauren Oliver’s Delirium series.

I quite liked The Power.

I didn’t like: Hollow Kingdom (such a great premise but gave up as I hated the writing style), Moths. The Last, which I took on a previous holiday and finished but didn’t enjoy. Also not a Stephen King fan.

I’m looking up past threads too but any suggestions are appreciated, old or new!

I came onto the thread to recommend this! Great book and yes I think what makes it so disturbing is that the world it describes isn't so very different from ours.

I started this and thought it was so well written but I found the family issues too upsetting!

I've read the whole thread and am really surprised that nobody has mentioned Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. Classic dystopian fiction!

It was mentioned way back on August 9th!

Although people probably assume the OP has read it anyway?

toffeechai · 16/08/2022 16:39

@MuddlerInLaw I haven’t read it actually! I watched a bit of a crappy TV adaptation that put me off.

The Book of Strange New Things
Novel by Michel Faber

SizzlestheSausageDog · 16/08/2022 16:51

The passage series is gripping but I had to stop reading some of the first one at night because it was freaking me out a bit!
I really want to read How High We Go in the Dark, sounds a bit like station 11.
Emily At John Mandel has written a couple more books with different disasters too, maybe worth a look.

Pinkdaisy2 · 17/08/2022 01:32

I am reading the Ageing by Jack hunt at the moment.

also recommend the Gone series, Maze-runner and divergent series

SusanPill · 20/08/2022 09:50

Added some of these to my own list.

Another vote for Oryx and Crake. Brilliant book.

I maintain that Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath is a post apocalyptic novel, but the apocalypse was economic.

If The Stand is not an option how about
Megan Hunter The End we Start From
David Brin The Postman
Stephen Baxter Flood

Great point about 'Grapes'.

Another vote for Dreamland - one of the only books I've been really gripped by this year, although 'enjoyed' wouldn't be the right word.

OrchardBlack · 22/08/2022 21:25

Following!!
I also loved 'Only Ever Yours'.

GertrudeKerfuffle · 24/08/2022 16:21

Here's a left-field choice - it's classed as hard sci-fi, not my usual genre, but 'Seveneves' by Neal Stephenson.

I actually had dreams about the apocalyptic scenario afterward 😱 I found it to be totally gripping.

Last one at the party by Bethany Clift and The End of men by Christina Sweeney-Baird

Huge thanks for recommending Last One at the Party - it was exactly the kind of thing I love and just the book I needed to read right now.

I've just finished reading this on the back of the thread. Absolutely loved it.

The Book of Strange New Things
Novel by Michel Faber

One of my very favourites.

I’ll add The Men by Sandra Newman.

TightDiamondShoes · 16/09/2022 10:01

I’m halfway through “last one at the party” and I’ll have to choose my words carefully as I suspect she’s a mn-er.

had I picked this up for a browse, I wouldn’t have read further than the first 2 pages because it was very “Twitter-sneary”, but I persevered and this morning rolled my eyes and joked there’s bound to be a “trump worra cunt” moment. Lo and behold. Just waiting for “haha boris funny hair” and “nhs privatisation” and the bingo card will be complete.

im going to finish it to see if the main character develops any self-awareness and whether she cooks the dog with olives.

so much promise, so much sixth form common-room…

norespectformyself · 16/09/2022 11:39

also did not enjoy last one at the party at all.
in fact i'm putting it down to be a YA style book and have a feeling there's a sequel in the offing which i will definitely avoid

loopylindi · 16/09/2022 11:43

Children of men PD James

Hugh Howey - Wool trilogy.

There is some great fan fiction on amazon kindle for this trilogy too.

WeCanBeHappyUnderground · 16/09/2022 11:54

Not read the whole thread so not sure if they've been mentioned but Brave New World is one of my all time favourites and I also loved Klara and the Sun

KleineDracheKokosnuss · 16/09/2022 12:06

I just read ‘last one at the party’.

Didn’t much like the main character as she’s very inept (not a spoiler since the book points this out at the start) but I did enjoy the book. Spent a fair bit of time wanting to shout ‘you silly twonk’ though.

currently reading Wool.
